There are also various practical strategies and historical anecdotes that are at once inspiring and hope instilled. It could be that this type of personality is behind many great artists and scientists who focused intensely on one area and made huge progress but were still considered dropouts and eccentrics. In 1979 Hartmann and his wife Louise founded New England Salem Children's Village whose main purpose is to provide a home and a nurturing environment for neglected and emotionally disturbed children and New England Salem Childrens Trust (NESCT).

This book kind of falls apart near the end (in true ADD form), but it is still a thought provoking and insightful (if not outright revolutionary) read that anyone struggling with, living with, or in any relation to, someone with ADD or ADHD should not only read, but absorb. For those with TSDD it opens easily, maybe too easily, and they seek stimulation with greater caution. I had come across the title in passing before, and always overlooked it as the premise didn’t resonate. The theory put forth is interesting and helpfully positive, but i was hoping this book would go into greater detail and explore supporting evidence. After feeling pretty torn up and unworthy and downright confused about my place in the world, this book helped me reframe my diagnosis in a way that made me love the way my mind works while simultaneously understanding that my type of mind isn’t in fact a burden, but indeed integral to society.

He does spend time talking about the high incidence of ADHD in prisons, outside of a very brief paragraph he avoids discussing the systemic reasons that people of color, and people in poverty are less likely to get treatment for ADHD, and more likely to have harsh sentences for crime. According to evolutionary anthropologist Ben Campbell of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, studies of the Ariaal, an isolated nomadic group in Kenya, suggest that hyperactivity and impulsivity—key traits of ADHD—have distinct advantages to nomadic people. Again what seems most effective is changing the style of teaching to the style of the Hunter, a style that encourages creativity.

But if ADHD is a genetic disease or an abnormality, it’s a popular one, possibly afflicting as many as 25 million individuals in the United States. This discovery caused some psychologists to initially postulate that ADHD was the result of growing up in a dysfunctional family; they suggested that ADHD may follow the same pattern as child or spousal abuse. this book is a wonderful, joyful educator and extreme tear jerker, be prepared to hear some very painful stories that you will likely empathise with and have possibly experienced. He sold his interest in that company in 1996 and retired to Vermont, although he and Louise now live in Washington D.

While it offers a great perspective of ADHD as an asset the authors do not spend enough time talking about the experiences of people with far less privilege than the primarily white and male success stories they offer as examples. This is the spirit in which this book is offered, with the sincere hope that it may help more teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and parents to empower and enable rather than label as sick or disabled ADD children and adults.

Henry Harpending of the University of Utah reports that with this genetic mutation, "You probably do better in a context of aggressive competition. A second, and equally important, goal is to provide specific tools to “work around” the dilemma of being an ADHD “Hunter” in a contemporary society that is largely structured for and by non-ADHD “Farmers,” a concept we will explore in detail. The Hunter needs to be sensitive to the distractive noises in the forest and respond to these noises with his short but intense attention span to give him what he needs to know to make quick or snap decisions. This society has become so lazy we would rather slap a label on a kid, medicate them into zombies and not have to parent.Creativity requires risk taking with motivation from within the person and the belief in one’s own goals. It was at that point I lost all interest in finishing the book, and only did so out of spite and the need to achieve my reading goal for the year. I was fortunate enough to have enough IQ points and the interpersonal skills to minimize any adverse consequences before I was diagnosed.

The need for constant stimulation, impulsivity and ability to act in high risk situations would have made the hunter quite successful. This hypothesis proposes that ADHD represents a lack of adaptation of members of hunter-gatherer societies to their transformation into farming societies. Genes, polymorphisms, and the making of societies : how genetic behavioral traits influence human culture. There are perhaps a few parts that could have been broadened or deepened in context, but it's a well-rounded, affirming book on the topic. Being able to plan without constantly being on the edge of one's seat, and able to do those kinds of things.

Consistent with this, the health status of nomadic Ariaal men was higher if they had the ADHD associated genetic variant (7R alleles), whereas in recently sedentary (non-nomadic) Ariaal, those with 7R alleles seemed to have slightly worse health. The relaxing average person would fall at the middle or in the 5 to 7 inch area, while the relaxed Hunter would be found in the 7 to 8 inch area and the relaxed Farmer in the 4 to 5 inch area. I recommend anyone interested in a better understanding of what ADHD really is, to read this book, and others like it, whether you have it or not, especially if you know someone that has it.
