About this deal

You can use a USB cable* to connect this instrument's USB port to your smartphone, tablet, or computer, and use the B2 as a MIDI keyboard to play an external sound module. Your performance on the B2 can be recorded as music data on your smartphone, and sound from your smartphone can be heard through the speakers of the B2. As an old-school jazz pianist and teacher, I’m not necessarily interested in crazily high-tech keyboards. I prefer simplicity and authenticity. I’ve been on the lookout for a new temporary piano until the repair in my studio is over. I’ve tested a lot of digital pianos, and it is always interesting to review some fresh model. This time I chose Korg B2. Korg B2 in the interior Control-wise, things are very basic. Apart from the volume knob, all the features are operated from a few buttons, requiring occasional key/button combos. The feel of the knobs and buttons are passable. The comments we shared for the B1 still apply here. Korg has once again created a digital piano that is no-frills (though one might say bare bones is a more accurate descriptor), though it certainly sounds amazing. The Yamaha P-45 is part of Yamaha’s P-series (the P stands for Portable) and is Yamaha’s most affordable piano featuring weighted hammer action.

The reverb adds some subtle ambience to the sound. Combined with the natural reverb in most of the presets, this makes the sound feel like it’s in a large room. Preset voices: There are 12 present voices in this piano, which includes 5 grand pianos, stage electric pianos, digital electric piano, pipe organ, harpsichord, electric organ, orchestral strings, etc. The included software – Scoove, Korg Module LE and the Korg Gadget LE – make this model good for piano learning, as do the built-in metronome. The other pieces of software included are the Korg Module LE and the Korg Gadget LE. I haven’t yet tried these out, so you’ll have to see for yourself! Connectivity Transpose, Master Tuning, Metronome, Built-in piano-effects: String Resonance, Damper Resonance, Key Off ResonanceAs for the headphones, try using different headphones and you’ll notice that the amount of noise changes depending on what headphones you use. The noise you hear via headphones is likely because you’re using headphones with lower impedance (earbuds?), which are more susceptible to noise. When it comes to comparisons, I recommend the FP-10 to beginner pianists. The more realistic keys are excellent for learning the piano while also practicing correct technique. The extra price is well worth it in this regard.

The Italian Concert Piano has a somewhat Yamaha-ish tone, with no overly pronounced frequencies, so it’s my go-to for use with the B2. This is a mobile music production app for iPad/iPhone that provides miniature synthesizers and drum machines called "gadgets," and allows you to freely combine these to enjoy producing music with an intuitive interface. However, the limited functionality of the B1 remains and is a massive downside to the B2, especially since other digital pianos have nearly standardized these extras.

Nothing in this agreement shall affect the statutory rights of any person dealing with Korg as a consumer. Korg may on occasions supply software programs, data files and/or documentation belonging to a third party or parties (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Third Party Software”). Dimensions are fairly standard and the B2 falls in line with most other digital pianos. A slightly unique aspect of the B2 is its large speaker grill located on the front panel, above the keybed and controls.

This instrument’s 12 distinctive voices, which cover almost all styles, are its heart. Every genre is covered, with electric piano, organ, harpsichord, strings, and five new piano sounds provided by the new piano engine. Additionally, this keyboard has a sustain pedal in the style of a piano, an audio input for jamming with your favorite tunes, and a headphone output for private practice. The Korg B2’s clean, modern look is what immediately catches your attention. We admired this about the prior iteration, so it’s good to see Korg maintain this aesthetic in the upgrade. If you want to practice and you want to learn how to play the piano, this piano is for you. It is portable and usable, no matter where you are. Transposition: It is possible to move up to 5 or 6 semitones, offering access to a complete octave of expanded range. USB cable sold separately for connection to your PC, and a USB cable + Lightning-USB camera adaptor (both sold separately) for connection to your iPhone or iPad. AUDIO IN This instrument uses a Natural Weighted Hammer Action (NH) keyboard that reproduces the same feel that results from the hammers on a real acoustic piano, where the low register is heavier and the high register is lighter. The keybed is sensitive and responds to nuanced touch at the tip of your fingers. For people wanting to use digital audio workstations or performance software, this is great, as you don’t need to have an external audio interface to use the sounds on the B2.

While digital pianos haven’t been Korg’s main focus, their long-running experience in instrument manufacturing ensures that there’s always a degree of polish and quality with their products. USB cable sold separately for connection to your PC, and a USB cable + Lightning-USB camera adaptor (both sold separately) for connection to your iPhone or iPad. Again, we’d like to reiterate that the NH and GHS action aren’t bad, despite being placed low. There are just better options that feel better subjectively.
