This was a struggle, because it was the first book I ever wrote. I’ve never written anything to completion like that before so I was trying to learn how to actually write a story, then try to weave all of these very sensitive issues and handle them in a way that would be appropriate for a young audience. But you need to be honest with children and teens and not shy away from certain things, it just needs to be age appropriate. So that’s something that I learned as I wrote the first draft and went through a few more edits as well.So, I didn’t tell her that I got ninety-five per cent – the highest in the class – along with three of Ms Williams’s coveted smiley faces. The predictability of the plot lost points in what otherwise was a good book about a Somali Muslim girl who was bullied at school (by "the Braids", a group of super popular girls) and ultimately targeted by others because of her religion. At one point, the school wants to create rules that would ban headscarves - but there are only three students who wear them, and it's their choice not imposed by others. At another, Hamam is paired with the worst Braid as a peer tutor: anyone want to guess how that will end up? These two are such antisocial trash, she says, releasing me and indicating Lily and Isha, who are both absorbed with their phones. I’ve had no one to talk to for the last five minutes, she complains. She slides off her gold-rimmed glasses, cleaning the lenses with the edge of her headscarf, and makes a face.

There are so many aspects that I enjoyed - reading about Somalian culture and heritage, Hanan's equation with each of her family members felt personal and relatable, and most importantly, her faith and beliefs, the strength, peace and clarity Hanan gets from reciting prayers. I laud Ayaan Mohamud's efforts for writing this narrative, a story which needed to be told. This is representation in its purest form. I wanted to give it 4.5 stars because the ending felt rushed but on reflection, I am glad the way it concluded and I understand why Hanan's future was left to the reader's imagination. A brilliant debut and I look forward to more!
