Oh, man, I loved this. Poetry is always a hit-or-miss for me, but lately I've been having a lot of trouble finding collections I really connect with, and this one was just what I needed. Group TF. 2020. Travel and Conflict in the Early Modern World Gélleri G, Willie R. Routledge 9780367524210 That said, despite these issues, what I'll remember most from Fat Girl Finishing School is Wiley's tenderness, towards her body and herself. I've already memorized multiple quotes from Fat Girl Finishing School to tell myself on difficult days. From "Naked Atonement," my favorite poem in this collection: "I need no one's green light to love you but my own,/and from here on out, it is all emerald/brilliance and go." From "Daylight," which Wiley dedicated to a bullied fan: "We are the daylight/and no one can go on if the day starts hiding." I can't endorse every part of Fat Girl Finishing School, but poems like these make the collection absolutely worth reading. If you're interested in beautiful, richly detailed, subversive poetry that crawls into bed with you and tells you that you deserve love, then Fat Girl Finishing School is for you.My research covers seventeenth century literary history and culture. My first book, "Staging the Revolution: drama, reinvention and history, 1647-72" (shortlisted for the University English Early Career Book Prize, 2016) offers a reappraisal of drama, both in terms of live performances and performances on the paper stage. My book argues that, far from 1660 marking a watershed moment as is often asserted in the texts transmitted in the Restoration and assumed to be true by later critics, late seventeenth-century England was concerned with the continuing legacies of recent history and this is revealed in literature printed and disseminated in the period. While researching this book, I became intrigued by the number of anonymous scurrilous pamphlets ‘by the man in the moon’ and I have begun a wider study on ‘long seventeenth-century’ responses to the moon as an embodied and as a philosophical construct. With Kevin Killeen and Helen Smith, both based at the University of York, I co-edited "The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Early Modern England, c. 1530-1700" (winner of the Roland H. Bainton Prize in Reference Works, 2016). More recently, my research has broadened to consider emotions and the senses by drawing from my interests in material cultures and the relationship between literature and the epistemologies that underpin politics, religion and natural philosophy; this is supported by considering the relationship between literature and history. I have ongoing interests in early modern drama, music, cheap print, publicness, the early modern soundscape, history and cultural history, and the history of ideas. Willie RJ. 2008. I first heard of Rachel Wiley in 2012 when I saw a video recording of “10 Honest Thoughts On Being Loves By a Skinny Boy”. I was in a loveless relationship with a skinny boy at the time and thought, “If she could write something like that, I could find a boy to love me like this.” So I ended my relationship to one day find a better one. I’m still waiting. Since it was first broadcast on 2 January 2012, Riley has also performed her Countdown role on the comedy crossover spin-off version, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, alongside comedian Jimmy Carr as host. Searing, commanding, and relentlessly brilliant, Revenge Body is a visceral journey of how to come home to yourself after a history of hurt. This collection is truly genius. Rachel Wiley makes me want to be a better writer, and there are poems in here that will welcomely haunt me for the rest of my life. What a masterpiece, what a breathtaking dive.Willie RJ. 2015.
