About this deal

There are so many potential ways to letter this that would alter and re-shape the tone and mood of the scene. The story was too short for me to really care about any of the characters, except maybe Chasma, and the art was a little jarring to look at sometimes. Gillen comments in his intro that he assumed RK lettered the book himself, which is very understandable when you read the book, given how much of a key component the lettering is in the telling of the story and how closely it bleeds together with the imagery. This is the only book where you see the absolute hybrid monster that is the Indian-Chinese cuisine with insane (if accurate) menus full of all kinds of wacky dishes, as the menu itself seems to have stains of colored water, conveyed on the page.

Author Ram V and artist Anand R K really capture life in this city, the good and the bad, through a series of interconnected slice-of-life moments that feel genuine and heartfelt.I want people to see it, to see all the little things, even the tweaks and the messes,” because that is Mumbai, yeah? So Suresh (“Grafity”) paints walls because he’s good at it and there aren’t any other outlets for him. I’ve always thought of comics as music on paper and you can kind of structure your stories like songs. There’s so much going on in each panel that it’s fun to just look at the drawings and see all the interesting details.

Four stories of four young people clinging to the underside of Mumbai, four stories about how they are kicked around and struggle to find a place.

However, the most striking thing about Grafity’s Wall is showcasing the childhood for the four kids, each with their distinct voices. It’s every wall, it’s every empty thing, every wreckage, every broken thing, every blank space that just needs the right spark of Promethean fire. The outer cosmos of tens of millions of people who try to survive in this anthill is counterbalanced by those moments of self-exile our characters go through as they find peace from chaos when they can finally be in front of a wall. And Saira, who comes to Mumbai with Bollywood dreams but must first survive the reality in this place of gangsters, con-men, friends and lovers. Its effect was massive, as I’d never read a tale of, again, myths I knew, details I understood, and the past I’d learned about played with and depicted in this lovely medium.

Bidikar hand-lettered it, as he explains in the back, and the lettering is also terrific, as the use of both upper- and lower-case letters makes even the lettering look a bit more fluid, matching the artwork nicely. It’s a sequence of different points of view, then, all linked by the kind of frustration that can be experienced in a manner that leaves a mark – or a scar – on our psyche, conditioning perhaps our behaviour, and which our protagonists know they must overcome, somehow. If that doesn't work, there may be a network issue, and you can use our self test page to see what's preventing the page from loading. Graphic novels / comic books can do things with narrative that regular old prose can't, but with Grafity's Wall I got the impression that the story would've worked better as text. This thing is lived-in, this thing is textured and perhaps that’s the big thing, that’s the big reason I love it more than These Savage Shores.o texto do Ram V é sensível, embora às vezes um pouco açucarado pro meu gosto, mas o encontro entre a vida periférica e o desejo de fazer arte rende uma história muito bonita. And it’s not done because the most accurate, detailed anatomical vision of something cannot be pulled off. Loved the characters and the illustrations and the themes around coming of age especially in a place like Mumbai which reminded me of NYC. If you’ve already done that, your item hasn’t arrived, or it’s not as described, you can report that to Etsy by opening a case.

Please be aware that colours may vary slightly from what you see on your screen, depending on your monitor settings. The same can be said with the girl Saira, who wants to escape from the pervy clutches of Mario and wants to become an actress. Mumbai itself is a great character too, with its inequality and the constant hustle it demands of anyone hoping to grab onto a rare opportunity to make their dreams come true before they’re chewed up.
