About this deal

In this book, Asma reveals the secret to her success, telling her immigrant’s story and how food brought her home.

I was lucky enough to read Ammu in digital form before it went to the printers, but that hasn’t lessoned the glee I feel at being able to hold it now in my hands one iota. If our taste buds are inherited, Asma Khan is definitely lucky, for her mother Faizana Khan or Faizu Apa as she is better known, knew what brilliant recipes were all about. Many of the recipes are vegetarian, there are sweet treats and drinks, too, and all feature alongside lesser-known recipes and stories unique to Asma's family. It’s funny because while I have shelves of cookbooks, there’s nothing like this one, something that transports me to my childhood, reminds me of the dishes my Mum used to make.

With so many recipes already offered to feed one’s imagination and appetite, it’d be greedy to ask for more – but I do hope the sequel dips into Asma’s fabulous Indo-Chinese repertoire and reveals the secrets of the kati rolls I could eat infinitely and exclusively. Suzy Chase: So for women dealing with the still prevalent misogynistic world, what advice would you give them?Khan's cuisine reflects that of the Mughal Empire, which used a subtler range of spices than common in later Indian cooking. Ammu’ really shows you how you can really be someone incredible by cooking,” says Khan, of her latest work. Fast forward two decades, and her daughter Asma Khan has charmed London with Darjeeling Express, a haven for Indian home cooking, right in the heart of Covent Garden. Anyone who has been taught by a South Asian mother will know how random their instructions are, without measurements, without temperatures.

But, through lighting, prop selection and canny compositions, Kim Lightbody’s images manage to make every dish look as good as it tastes. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Khan includes concise and helpful directions in 80-plus recipes for meat, fish, vegetables and more ' The book is divided into dishes for two, family dishes and fancy party cooking. It is a tribute to Ammu, Asma’s mother, to the simple home cooking from her kitchen in Calcutta, and an exploration of the inextricable link between food and love. Right now, we have two pregnant women in our kitchen and I just want people to know that we symbolise women in every stage of their lives – from very young students to grandmothers.
