About this deal

It was on one such winter night, when she was trying to sleep, that she heard a noise steadily growing louder, voices and grunts, despite she knew there were no humans or animals for miles around, what with the entire earth being blanketed in snow. It is believed that, from her, originates the custom of giving gifts to children on Christmas, to continue the kind work of Baboushka. She didn’t hear the sounds of the pipes and drums playing music, and she missed her neighbours whispering in wonder at what the lights were. In this version we have the five interlocked dolls, each of which has their own special character; they are Antonia, who represents beauty, Loretta who shows wealth, Paula who is multi-talented, Viola who represents wisdom and finally Mary, whilst she is the smallest she represents love and compassion, something to be prized.

And now Babushka could see it, a star brighter than bright, shining in like the shiniest diamond, so beautiful your heart might break, seeming to get bigger even as she looked at it. This is her first book for children and the whole process has been very much her project; however I am sure that we will be hearing more from her in the future. From their rich clothing and fine features, Babushka guessed that they were men of learning who had traveled from far away in the East.Baboushka immediately lit her last candle, wrapped a scarf around her head and peeped through her frosted window.

For many, Christmas is a time of merry making and gift giving, of bonding with friends and family and of spending time in the warm glow of love. The author, Catherine Flores is from Switzerland, but now lives on the beautiful island of Madeira with her partner and their small son.Baboushka is an old woman living in a meager hut in present-day Russia at the time of the birth of Jesus. Before long, she heard a loud pounding at her door and she rushed to open it, thinking that it must be a cold and famished traveler, only to find three large horses with three noblemen dressed in some of the finest and richest clothes that she had ever seen. The purple-blue illustrations capture the cold tundra of Russia and the trials of Babushka’s travel. No sooner said than done, and soon the three kings were settled in Babushka’s little kitchen, eating mushroom soup and good fresh bread and honey cakes to follow, with as much tea as they wanted.
