About this deal

You would have to use a lot of Epsom salts to make this work but luckily Epsom salts are fairly inexpensive. Eventually, the stump will decompose, and the hole that’s left behind can be filled in and smoothed over. The active ingredient in Tordon kills the plant cells as it passes through them until it reaches the roots of the tree. The concentrated chemical comes in a 32-ounce bottle and should be diluted at the rate of 8 to 16 tablespoons per gallon of water.

The tree will begin healing itself right away so to have the greatest effect apply within 30 minutes. That said, some of the most effective stump killers use chemicals such as triclopyr and picloram; these herbicides pose a threat to wildlife and can even cause collateral damage to nearby shrubs and trees. That means that you’ll have a dead stump lying around in your garden for months waiting for nature to take its course. Construct a cage around the stump using something like chicken wire and then fill it with dry leaves and vegetable food waste. Be cautious that you don’t stand downwind as it will smoke and will burn your eyes or breathing it will harm your lungs. This includes drilling 1–2 inch deep holes around the outer ring of a cut stump and filling them with Roundup. The recommended amount is generally 1 to 2 milliliters per cut, depending on the tree's circumference. Normally, you would cut the tree down and treat the outer layer or cambium layer of the tree with Tordon to kill it but I think that drilling several holes into the roots through the dirt would work as well. Stem injection can also be made using a basal tree injector such as the one produced by Tree Spear Pty Ltd – see here for more information.

We also included products that require drilling holes in a stump before application, as that may be the best way to kill a stump. Tordon RTU should not be applied on residential or commercial lawns or near desirable trees and shrubs. Tordon 22K herbicide controls a wide range of perenial and annual broad leaved weeds in non-crop land. If you treat a tree with Tordon that is a shoot-off of the parent tree, then the parent tree and child tree will die. Dilute at 1:4 in water and depending upon the sapling size, apply 1–2 mL of the mix per injection pocket (cut).Products that come in the form of granules, also require drilling holes and pouring warm water on the granules.

Digging or chopping out a stump is challenging at best, and in some cases, nearly impossible without using heavy equipment. After a few months, the owner may be able to pour kerosene on a partially decomposed seasoned stump and burn it. It doesn’t freeze which means it will stay effective for a long period of time preventing new sprouts and penetrating deeper where the tree roots are. Use a pointed shovel to remove the soil around the stump, employing loppers and a reciprocating saw to remove roots along the way. Although it requires some more work, the results are more satisfactory and the soil is ready to plant immediately.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is water-based and will evaporate rather than penetrate the bark. As with other herbicides, you’ll need to know how to use Tordon RTU safely and how to get the most out of it. I was very careful however to not allow any spilling or run off of Tordon and only let the top of the tree stump get Tordon on it.

As such it’s quite safe to use and doesn’t cause any irritations if it comes in contact with the skin. Others are looking to stop volunteer trees from growing where they shouldn’t be growing, and we also considered that need. You’ll need a few applications before the herbicide makes its way to the roots of the stump and kills them.

Not only will using more Tordon not speed up the stump-killing process, it wastes the products, creates more of an impact on the environment, and could even damage nearby trees if it finds its way to their root system. Tordon will kill palm trees, however, most palm trees will die by simply cutting them down to a stump without the need of a tree killer like Tordon. Plants susceptible to Tordon RegrowthMaster include (but are not limited to) fruit trees, grape vines, legumes (pea, beans, lucerne, etc. It’s critical to apply the herbicide treatment immediately after making the cuts, to ensure it is absorbed by the tree. When using any herbicide like Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide you need to give the product ample time to dry and become rainfast after application.
