About this deal

Our journalist MC, Amanda, is determined to find the baby and break open the Alperton Angels case in a new way, making a name for herself. But now in present day, the baby is eighteen years old and available to interview, if it can be found. Little by little, Tudor reveals more about what has happened, as we get to know Hannah, who is on a coach that has crashed in a snowstorm, killing many of the travellers. Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U.

I find myself on the edge of my seat as the conspiracy deepens becoming infinitely more dangerous with so many things not adding up. If you enjoyed both The Appeal and The Twyford Code then I’m sure you will really enjoy this one too. The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels is a multi-layered puzzle filled with intrigue and suspense.

They're imaginatively formatted, filled with great characters and even greater puzzels, and – most importantly – have a stonkin' good story at the heart of them. She had the puzzle element down in the first book but I didn't care about the characters or connect emotionally with the story. On the surface, the central mystery of The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels is far from cosy: it concerns a sinister cult leader who has languished in jail since 2003 after persuading a teenage acolyte that her baby was the Antichrist and needed to be sacrificed. The premise here is that an investigative journalist is writing a book about an infamous cult murder/suicide that took place about eighteen years before. We thought that this was the last we'd hear about the cult that killed themselves when they thought they failed to murder the baby they presumed to be the anti-Christ, but we were wrong.

Another murder, a presumed ritualistic killing committed by Gabriel also figures in the list of crimes. The Angels committed suicide rather than stand trial, while mother and baby disappeared into the care system. There were also differences in reports of what police and social workers were present at the time of the Alperton deaths. I received an advance review copy of The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels from the publisher through NetGalley. A missing child lies at the heart of Janice Hallett’s ‘cracking mystery’ The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels.

The author delivers twist after twist that blew my mind, with each reveal leaving me more and more shocked 😱 Loved how everything was executed and came together too! And as ever, the author’s control of the material is masterly, the eventual solution quelling any misgivings or objections the reader may have had along the way.

Just a wacky cult, four dead, mutilated men and a mystery no one’s had the chance to uncover properly yet. But there are forces at play that don’t want them to succeed and people who would go to any length to make sure that the secrets surrounding the case stay buried. The mystery may not have been any different from your average murder mystery, but The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels sets itself apart from the typical fashion by presenting the storyline in a unique fashion that was both intriguing and enticing and compelling enough for me to give it a chance. But the biggest problem is that this narrative is framed as a mystery without delivering the pleasures of a mystery. After ensnaring the teenagers and convincing them that the baby was destined to doom humanity, they planned to kill the infant at the appointed time – 10 December 2003 – when five planets were due to align in a rare astral occurrence. I even got quite scared reading it at night because of the direction I thought the book was going in. Two surviving members, Jonah and Holly, both teenagers and their baby have withdrawn from the public eye since then.

Afterwards, both mother and child vanished, and in the past 18 years anyone who has tried to unearth them seems rapidly to have died in suspicious circumstances. We cannot have more people gaining interest in The Alperton Angels and discover what has been hiding in plain sight all along. My tip for next year is The Maiden by Kate Foster – a feminist interpretation of an ancient murder mystery with its roots in Scottish folklore. In Hallett’s previous books, the detection of the crime – and the crimes themselves – had origins in characters we learned to care about. Amanda is now looking to find, identify and interview that baby, now 18 years old, she is an experienced and manipulative investigator and unearths a raft of contradictory evidence, is there a natural human explanation for this or is there something more sinister at play?
