About this deal

Although the oil from crushed leaves may have some ability to discourage mosquitoes, the plants alone are grown more for their refreshing scent than as a mosquito repellent. Feed plants in containers with a high potassium liquid feed, such as tomato feed, weekly or fortnightly throughout the growing season. Alternatively, everbearing, remontant or perpetual varieties crop on and off throughout the summer, and produce smaller fruits. It provides a lovely fragrance and flavor to a dish, especially when leaves are sautéed before adding.

A member of the mint family, catnip creates a comical response in most cats, with lots of purring, rubbing, and rolling on the plant. With summer-fruiting strawberries, once cropping has finished, cut off the old leaves about 10cm (4in) above the crown to allow fresh leaves to develop. Suitable cultivars include ‘Cambridge Favourite’ AGM, ‘Honeoye’ AGM, ‘Rosie’, ‘Royal Sovereign' and ‘Tamella’. While the thought of a smaller mesh sounds enticing, my basic biology knowledge tells me that strawberries may need pollinators like bees. These will produce strawberries in 60 days, reverting to their natural cropping period the following year.As strawberries are perishable, it's best to eat them straight from the plant, ideally still warm from the sun. Choose a variety of strawberries that fruit at different times, so you can harvest them over a longer season. Add chamomile to the garden, and brew a cup of homegrown, soothing chamomile tea to unwind before bed.

Hardy through zones 7 and warmer, it is a great winter garden plant and looks beautiful in containers with pansies or other winter color. They are a good choice for a smaller garden as they have a long cropping season and don't take up too much space. Many strawberries even produce new plantlets (or runners) after fruiting, so you can easily increase your plants every year or use them to replace older plants that are past their best. The technical term for this type of net is Raschel which is a type of warp knitting in which parallel monofilaments are looped together in a zigzig pattern along the length of the net. Imagine a bird just flying along and spotting, below, a dessert bar—a long matted row of sweet, juicy berries. The connectors, either build a balls or joiners are used to connect the 13mm crossbars, these then connect to the legs. You can use a fleece net over our strawberry cages over winter, with extra pegs for wind resistance.

The key to growing rosemary is a well-drained soil that stays evenly moist at first; as the plant takes root it becomes increasingly drought tolerant.Plant the strawberry plants 30-45cm apart, in rows 75cm apart, so their roots are just buried, and firm the soil around them. It is not fitted as this would make it difficult on the larger cages to take off the netting with just one person.

Tuck some straw around the plants just before the fruits start to develop, or put a strawberry mat around each plant. Curled parsley has beautiful, dark green leaves well known as the classic garnish for deviled eggs and an ingredient in tabbouleh (parsley salad) or white clam sauce for pasta. Most of our netting is made from high density polyethylene monofilament which is black and contains ultra-violet stabilisation additives to a level of 2% which gives a protection of 400kLy.If you purchase a strawberry cage kit with netting, it will come complete with pegs for securing the netting to the soil and C clips for holding the netting to the aluminium poles. Cloches should give you fruits at least a week ahead of unprotected plants, an unheated greenhouse about two weeks ahead, so you could be enjoying ripe berries as early as late April. Like in the picture below from a few years ago when I grew strawberries on an aboveground container. Sometimes known as the "fish herb" because it's such a delicious complement to fish, dill is used in many dishes, especially dips, soups, vinegars, and salads. Lemon balm, a member of the mint family, is a lovely mild herb named for the lemony scent of its leaves.
