About this deal
Intermediate lavas form andesite domes and block lavas and may occur on steep composite volcanoes, such as in the Andes.

Magma composition can be determined by processes other than partial melting and fractional crystallization.By 1958, there were some 12 separate classification schemes and at least 1637 rock type names in use. Basalt commonly erupts on Io (the third largest moon of Jupiter), [95] and has also formed on the Moon, Mars, Venus, and the asteroid Vesta.

Some basalts are quite light-coloured due to a high content of plagioclase, and these are sometimes described as leucobasalts. Although MORB compositions are distinctive relative to average compositions of basalts erupted in other environments, they are not uniform.

Basalt ( UK: / ˈ b æ s ɔː l t, - əl t/; [1] US: / b ə ˈ s ɔː l t, ˈ b eɪ s ɔː l t/) [2] is an aphanitic (fine-grained) extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of low- viscosity lava rich in magnesium and iron ( mafic lava) exposed at or very near the surface of a rocky planet or moon. Natrocarbonatite lavas of Ol Doinyo Lengai are composed mostly of sodium carbonate, with about half as much calcium carbonate and half again as much potassium carbonate, and minor amounts of halides, fluorides, and sulphates. Because volcanic rocks are mostly fine-grained or glassy, it is much more difficult to distinguish between the different types of extrusive igneous rocks than between different types of intrusive igneous rocks. However, the texture is only a subordinate part of classifying volcanic rocks, as most often there needs to be chemical information gleaned from rocks with extremely fine-grained groundmass or from airfall tuffs, which may be formed from volcanic ash. For instance, magmas commonly interact with rocks they intrude, both by melting those rocks and by reacting with them. The minerals that gave the original basalt its black colour have been metamorphosed into green minerals. citation needed] Naming [ edit ] An aphanitic volcanic sand grain, with fine-grained groundmass, as seen under a petrographic microscope Vesicular olivine basalt from La Palma (green phenocrysts are olivine). On Earth, 90% of lava flows are mafic or ultramafic, with intermediate lava making up 8% of flows and felsic lava making up just 2% of flows. Because of their lower silica content and higher eruptive temperatures, they tend to be much less viscous, with a typical viscosity of 3. Lava is molten or partially molten rock ( magma) that has been expelled from the interior of a terrestrial planet (such as Earth) or a moon onto its surface.
