About this deal

Jane Grigson was brought up in the north-east of England, where there is a strong tradition of good eating, but it was not until many years later, when she began to spend three months of each year in France, that she became really interested in food. We are both absolutely overwhelmed to have won the Jane Grigson Award, especially being up against three inspirational women. Drawing on her deep knowledge of Spanish culture, Vicky Hayward gives a modern retelling of an eighteenth-century classic cookbook, including fresh, simple and surprisingly easy to make recipes. Compared with recipes written by a chef, Jane is especially alert to the unexpected or puzzling elements sometimes encountered when cooking from a published recipe. Cook some sugar with a little water to a golden brown caramel and dribble it down the ‘eggs’– this turns the dessert into ‘ile flottante’ or floating island.

Charcuterie and French Pork Cookery was the result, exploring the wonderful range of cooked meat products on sale in even the smallest market towns. The Jane Grigson Award is an award issued by the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP). Whisk it into the beaten egg yolks, then pour the mixture back into the pan and cook over a low heat until the custard thickens, coating the back of the spoon. Recipes rooted in centuries of culture through folktales and anecdotes make West Winds so much more than a cookbook – it is an ode to Jamaica, its people and their heritage.

My mother also tried to mess around with this recipe (apples, onions etc), but nothing ever tasted better than the original.

The Jane Grigson Trust Award has made just the most enormous difference to the development of The Vinegar Cupboard. Butter an ovenproof or flameproof pot (according to whether you intend to cook the dish on top of the stove or in the oven). It was quite the surreal experience, my first award for something I have worked so hard and passionately on. Thank you to the Jane Grigson Trust and my publisher 4th Estate for giving me such a brilliant launchpad. In West Winds, Riaz Phillips tells countless tales of Jamaica through its dishes, drawing on his memories of growing up in the Caribbean diaspora of London and his time spent living in Jamaica. It was in 1968 that Jane Grigson began her long association with the Observer Magazine for whom she wrote right up until her untimely death in 1990; Good Things and Food With The Famous are all based on these highly successful series. Madame Glon lived in great simplicity next door to Jane and Geoffrey in Trôo and used to look after the cave for them when they weren't there. But equally important; the award gave me a huge amount of confidence in the stories I was telling and the messages I wanted the book to get across. It will combine Elly’s love of literature, food culture and history with her passion for herbs, spices, fruit and tea.

In 1966 she shared the John Florio prize (with Father Kenelm Foster) for her translation of Beccaria's Of Crime and Punishment. Tryout an experimental ‘egg’ first, to see how you go: do not despair if the final pile looks a little raggy. I’m not sure I would have discovered it if we hadn’t had a glut of quinces on our tree a few years ago and were casting around for ‘ways to use up quinces’. She is always cheerful and you can almost hear her peals of laughter at the numerous idiocies of modern life.Winning the award was the most wonderful thing to happen in the development of my book, giving me a renewed sense of inspiration, energy and a sense of why food writing continues to matter in the world. The shortlist of three will be announced in February 2024 and the winner will be announced in March 2024. In the spirit of Jane Grigson and her writing, the Jane Grigson Trust Award is for a non-fiction book on food and drink in the widest sense, from any genre – cookbook, memoir, travel, history – as long as the primary subject is food or drink.
