Annoyingly, this third-party app connectivity doesn’t extend to controlling your playlist, which would have been a great feature. The look of the Fitbit is unobtrusive, sort of like if Jony Ive had redesigned the probation service’s electronic monitoring tag.

You can cycle to other metrics with a tap of the screen, but that brings us to problem three: did I mention how tiny it is, and how difficult it is to accurately prod when going at speed? But bluntly it’s so awkward that the chances are you’ll just wait until you’re home to read up on how you did instead. You can get the metal strap in a host of color options, to suit all styles – with golf, silver, rose gold and even black catered for.

The quick-release catch on the Inspire HR and Inspire 2 means you can quickly and easily be able to switch them out - great for when you want to exercise with a sporty accessory but smarten things up for drinks in the evening. The sweat and water-resistant profile makes it fit for a swim with no fading concerns to be had when you hit the water. A unique feature of the Fitbit Inspire HR and Inspire 2 is that it can be clipped to the body, rather than worn on the wrist. And here, it’s surprisingly decent, offering data comparable to my own Garmin Forerunner 245 on my other wrist.

While it looks like the screen is quite large, this is actually an optical illusion: only a small window on the front surface – 17 x 10mm by my awkward ruler measurement – is actually occupied by the monochrome OLED display.The Fitbit Inspire 2 is a fitness tracker that tries to do it all and this leads to disappointment when it falls short. One of the most appealing aspects of the Inspire is that you can easily swap in and out the bands to change up the look.
