I’m not sure why Lukens chose not to dive into that discussion, but ultimately it does a disservice to the story. I don’t know if In Deeper Waters is intended to be the first in a series, but I’d love to see this world and these characters that Lukens created again.

Tal started the book not really knowing who he was or who he wanted to be, and he gained confidence and realized his own worth as he was faced with life or death situations and had to make some tough decisions. Heat pooled in his middle, and warmth rushed up the length of his spine into the tips of his fingers. Garrett’s laugh boomed in the enclosed space, and he chuckled the entire way up the ladder to the top deck. Their open marriage is no secret to their concerned friends, and Vic grows increasingly jealous, while Melinda laments his lack of passion.

It’s just that even with everything that’s going on, with kidnappings and ransoms, and a threat of war, there’s always this undercurrent of love.Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette. The story was quite predictable and tropey, a bit boring at times, and the characters were kind of bland. And when we get back to the castle for Isa’s wedding, we’ll have a plethora of bawdy stories to share with Kest. Melinda reconnects with an old boyfriend, Tony, and Vic overhears their conversation suggesting they will move to Brazil, taking Trixie with them. Tal has magic, unfortunately considered a curse in their kingdom, and so has been hidden his entire life.
