About this deal

A thoroughly cinematic drama, Elvis' story is seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Even if you hate Luhrmann's other movies, and he is definitely divisive, and even if you couldn't care less about Elvis in the year 2022, this movie is well worth watching for the sheer brilliance of Butler alone. In a review for IndieWire, David Ehrlich wrote that it "finds so little reason for Presley's life to be the stuff of a Baz Luhrmann movie that the equation ultimately inverts itself, leaving us with an Elvis Presley movie about Baz Luhrmann. It received generally positive reviews from critics; Butler's performance garnered widespread acclaim, and Luhrmann's direction, the cinematography, costume design, production design, and musical sequences also received praise, though the script, runtime and Hanks' performance drew polarized responses.

Luhrmann can be exhausting even at his best but he's also one of the few filmmakers that makes watching a movie such a textual experience, where sight and sound are layered in such meaningful and granular details to better immerse the viewer. The film became available for streaming exclusively on HBO Max on September 2, followed by the HBO network premiere on September 3. With the many onscreen performances, he is clearly talented, and offers his own versions of others' songs, but he's also deferential to the people he grew up with and the music he clearly loves and wants to be a part of to the detriment of whatever Tom Parker and his handlers believe is commercially viable. The entire acting troupe is all playing under one direction, and then there's Hanks in his fat suit, who is breaking through the fourth wall, compulsively narrating our story, and acting like a loquacious Loony Tunes figure any second away from his own song and dance.Critical response [ edit ] Austin Butler garnered critical acclaim for his performance as Elvis Presley, receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Most will share that view as the curtain comes down on this whirlwind chronicle of a career from which Parker took 50% of the profits and 100% of the control. Elvis is a 2022 epic [8] biographical drama film co-produced and directed by Baz Luhrmann, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner. You can feel his pure love, care, and respect for my father throughout this beautiful film, and it is finally something that myself and my children and their children can be proud of forever . Taking a lead from the 1972 film Elvis on Tour, the third act of Elvis’s life is presented in a split-screen haze, with Dr Nichopoulos pumping him full of drugs as Parker insists that “the only thing that matters is that that man gets up on that stage tonight”.

On May 25, 2022, Butler revealed to GQ that after filming wrapped in March 2021, he was hospitalized and bedridden for a week after being diagnosed with a virus that simulated appendicitis. Behind the hit songs, Elvis struggled like any other person and worked with a controversial figure to achieve his goals in the industry. The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley's rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. The accusations of Elvis corrupting the youth are all tinged with racial implications about his source of inspiration, never mind that Elvis was also influenced by a religious revivalism.Without me there would be no Elvis Presley,” drawls Tom Hanks’s Colonel Tom Parker (aka Dutchman Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk), a “snowman” or carnival huckster who does his deals on a Ferris wheel and who sounds genuinely amazed that “there are some who make me out to be the villain of this story! During this crazy sequence, Luhrmann's camera is trained on the emotional response of the audience experiencing a sensation that cannot be contained, bubbling to the surface into tears, shrieks, and convulsions, and it moves through the crowd like waves. Pictures to debut its entire 2021 slate concurrently in movie theatres and on HBO Max, before the film was officially pushed to 2022. That night, after witnessing his intense sex appeal at a " Louisiana Hayride" performance, Parker invites Elvis to accompany him on a tour and convinces Elvis to let him take control of his career, which begins Elvis' meteoric ascent: he moves from Sun Records to RCA Records, his father Vernon is appointed as business manager of Elvis Presley Enterprises, and the family is lifted out of poverty.

with Luhrmann set to direct, but the project languished in development hell until early 2019, when Hanks joined the film. When Elvis' flouts the authorities' warnings and performs sexually charged dance moves at a concert, he faces legal trouble. Butler was cast in the title role that July, beating out several other actors including Miles Teller and Harry Styles.
