About this deal

Objectives: Explore the theme of fear in an extract; write a diary entry from Ellie’s perspective; explain the significance of plot twists in Orphans of the Tide.

Ellie and Seth makes a good team...eventually. Hiding, running, trying to figure who he is, and what the enemy is. I would recommend this to anyone from about 10 years onwards because it’s a bit scary and might frighten young children. The most original opening I've read in years and a plot twist that turns brilliantly Abi Elphinstone, author of Sky Song The children in my class who read this book couldn’t stop telling me about it. They really were hooked from the get-go and would be desperate to talk about the plot with me at break and lunchtimes. Compared to sooo much other “fantasy” writing (especially that aimed at younger readers), ‘Orphans of the Tide’ is equally fresh and thrilling. I’d recommend it to everyone, but particularly anyone who adores HDMs.Singularly brilliant' - Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink and Stars and The Mercies

This is the third and final book in the Orphans of the Tide series. I couldn't wait for it to come out after reading the second book and I was pumped when I found out it was released. I hadn't gotten around to reading it yet, but I've finally read it!

Compellingly inventive and unpredictable, kept me guessing right till the end. - Piers Torday, author of The Last Wild Not if Ellie gets her chance to save the boy first; she is determined to prove that he is innocent. There must be something in one of her workshops, one of her inventions, that she can use to offer up proof. She doesn't have to tell everyone all of her secrets, as long as her inventions are there to protect her. The past cannot harm her if she won't speak it. Besides, she doesn't have time for friendship right now anyway. Saving the boy might be the only thing that can save the City from itself.

Ellie is the main character of this novel and when she was first introduced, I loved her immediately. Then, a few chapters in, I didn’t like her. To me, Ellie was rude to her friends and a bit of a know-it-all. She doesn’t treat her friends very well, keeps secrets from them and refuses to talk about certain subjects. The reader doesn’t know what these secrets are either and I found it very hard to like or trust her until the secrets began to unravel. Once you understand why Ellie is like she is, she becomes a lot more of a sympathetic character. I would also like to point out that in the first two books the author stayed on one person, the main character, Ellie. What I mean by staying is it was all written from her point of view but still in third person. However, during the third book the author switched from around four different people's points of view, which made it even more confusing and caused me too dislike the ending even more. I loved it! Dark and thrilling. Great characters to root for. Perilous plot. Extraordinary, vivid world building . . . brilliant! - Eloise Williams, Children's Laureate Wales Orphans of the Tide is singularly brilliant. So inventive, and weird, and beautiful, with just the right amount of bite and darkness. I predict big things! - Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink and Stars and The Mercies There's a literal Deus ex machina in this, and it is utilised incredibly effectively. This is a story about gods battling for the future of the whole world, and watching their schemes, manipulations, and best efforts in another realm being mirrored in the main one are exciting and thrilling.

The critically-acclaimed Orphans of the Tide trilogy reaches its spine-tingling climax and dramatic conclusion. Perfect reading for fans of His Dark Materials or Vashti Hardy. Orphans of the Tide is one of the best books I have read in 2020. Myth, legend and dark truths combine in this thrilling tale.

The author of the Anastasia books as well as more serious fiction ( Rabble Starkey, 1987) offers her first historical fiction—a story about the escape of the Jews from Denmark in 1943. I loved the premise for this story. I liked the idea of The Enemy housed in a Vessel. I loved the interplay between Finn and Ellie. I did love how the ending came together and I was glad I made it to the end. I chose this cos it was MG and once in a while I try one of those. But to be honest, what made this MG and not YA? I have no idea. The age of the character? I fear I must have missed it cos I had no age for her. She could have been 12, she could have been 20. She lived alone, worked as an inventor/fixing things. She had left the orphanage. Her best friend seemed to work there. Yes I saw her more as 18. But my bad for not hearing it. Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - The middle of the book, however, was great. Full of action, it was perfectly in sync with how I thought the book should have gone.Ellie is also at the scene when this boy is discovered. She's convinced he's not the Vessel, and that they're about to kill an innocent boy as a mistake. She just needs to work out how she, 13 years old and extremely disorganised, can save this boy and work out who he really is, instead. I loved this book. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, and was relatable, too. When you read it, you feel as if you are part of their world. I think Struan Murray did an incredible job! When a mysterious boy turns up in the body of a washed up whale, inventor Ellie ends up embroiled in The City's murky past. It's a past scattered with stories about murdered Gods, a lost civilization and the return of a vengeful Enemy who takes a vessel to give him power. This novel sweeps you off your feet and carries you away on a tide that is gripping, thrilling and gothically dark. It is a challenging and intense read, with the main rays of light being the little orphans and the strength of friendship throughout. The plot is highly unique with a mid-way twist that will leave your heart thumping in your chest. The narrative is broken up with diary extracts which add depth and increase tension and the voice of Finn is deliciously enjoyable.
