Her teachers teach her that a woman can do anything they set their minds to After about 15 minutes, invite students to turn to an elbow partner and share their watercolor painting, describing the place. From the title and picture on the cover, what do you think this book will be about?" (Responses will vary, but may include: a woman who plants trees.) Tell students that this is a true story about a woman named Wangari Maathai, who used trees to help her community. The forests are, as well a vital component of the livelihood of rural communities, providing them with firewood, food sources and, as mentioned, water. Much of the labour surrounding water and firewood is done by women in these communites. Therefore it was a logical step for Wangari Maathai to connect these issues. To protect the trees meant protecting the livelihhod of these women. To campaign for womens rights meant to protect their environment.

Read your sentence strip and decide whether you are a place (opinion) or a reason. Use the icon as a visual cue to help you read. For all that, I did enjoy the book quite a bit. Ideally, all picture books about Maathai would be available to be viewed and read at about the same time because they all offer something a bit different, and readers will get a more complete picture of this woman, the Green Belt Movement, and history if all are read. Transition students to their workspaces and invite them to begin watercoloring using the same routine from Work Time B of Lesson 5: The song came before the book. But the book is glorious. And if you can listen to one whilst reading the other, even better! The Cooking Club Detectives by Ewa Jozefkowicz (to be released on 10 thJune)Beautifully illustrated, the images will make you feel you are right there, with Mama Miti (mother of trees) and the people who sought her advice. You will feel the global impact as well, the risks Wangari took (being jailed several times) to do what was right and you be nourished by her unstoppable spirit. During Work Time A, students listen to the text Mama Miti read aloud. Students may find the language and structure of this text challenging. To mark this World Hunger Day and thanks to the incredible teams at Trussell Trust HQ and Barrington Stoke, I was gifted the opportunity to drop into the Enfield Food Bank, to see first-hand where all our supermarket donations go, and meet both those working to gift the goods, as well as those needing to receive them. the British colonists are no longer the masters of Kenya. The country is free, but the trees are not —they still cannot grow in peace. Kenyans are cutting down trees and selling them as the colonists did. By using the land where the trees used to grow to cultivate the tea, coffee, and tobacco sought by rich countries, they can make more money. (Prévot) Text-to-world connection: A text to world connection I found when reading this book is that something as easy as planting a tree or a plant can provide so much-food/drink/shelter. It is wonderful that the woman in this book, Mama Miti, was able to promote gardening and planting throughout her country.
