About this deal

zone iFCL exposure metering: Advanced iFCL exposure metering dissects a scene into 63-zones before analyzing it to find the perfect combination of shutter speed, aperture and ISO. All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 12 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb.

Luminance noise is well controlled and not too distracting at any point. It is at higher sensitivities and in shadow areas that it is most apparent, but images are very usable even at ISO 1600. The biggest increase in noise levels is at the maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. Given its particularly strong performance when it comes to noise, combined with a good sensitivity range, the EOS 1100D offers high-quality handheld and flash-free photography, even in low light. The high performing DIGIC 4 image processor allows you to freeze fast paced action and take remarkable images at 12.2 megapixels. This CMOS sensor is well suited for high speed photography as well as relatively high performances across low light conditions. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens handled chromatic aberrations well during the review. The examples shown here at 100% represent the absolute worst results you can expect from this lens mated to the EOS 1100D / T3.The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 has 2 different JPEG file quality settings available, including Fine and Normal, with Fine being the higher quality option. Here are two 100% crops which show the quality of the two options. Fine (4.33Mb) (100% Crop) English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Thai, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese Canon SELPHY Printers, Bubble Jet Printers with the direct print function and PIXMA Printers supporting PictBridge

There are a number of drive modes available on the Canon EOS 1100D / T3. These include Single Shot, Continuous Shooting, Self-timer and Remote Controlled Shooting. In Continuous Shooting mode, the camera can take pictures at a speed of 3 frames per second for up to 830 Large Fine JPEGs or 2fps for up to 5 RAW files. This is slower than the EOS 600D, especially if you're shooting in RAW, although the massive 830 shot buffer for JPEGs should cover most eventualities! Sitting alongside the Rebel XS (1000D), it's clear that T3 (1100D) is very slightly larger but only by a fraction. The new model eschews the 1000D's textured plastic, instead being constructed of smooth, rather low-density materials. The metering modes offered by the camera include Evaluative, Centre-weighted and Partial, which uses 10% of the frame area - the 1100D doesn't have a spot metering option. In use, we found that the Evaluative metering mode provided fairly good exposures with a variety of subjects, thanks to the advanced 63-zone metering sensor. When shooting contrasty scenes, it is worth using the Evaluative mode in conjunction with the Auto Lighting Optimiser feature, accessible by hitting the Q button and using the interactive status panel. The company is making no bones about the 1100D’s target entry-level audience – the camera is small, lightweight, easily navigated and feels like a budget-price model. White balance and colourThe Canon EOS 1100D's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 30 seconds, aperture of f/8 at ISO 100. Here is a 100% crop of the image to show what the quality is like. The EOS 1100D is supported by the complete range of EOS lenses and accessories: flashguns, remote releases and a system of more than 60 lenses trusted by professional photographers the world over. Creative Auto mode, meanwhile, is best described as a sort of halfway house between fully auto and more manual modes, with the 1100D allowing you to choose a ‘look’ for your photo and then allowing you to specify how much depth-of-field you want before making all the other calculations for you. As an easy-to-use creative mode it’s certainly useful, although we can’t really see how it helps beginners to learn the fundamentals of photography other than getting them to think about depth-of-field.

Like all recent EOS models, the 1100D is compatible with Eye-Fi memory cards, which enable users to upload images and videos wirelessly. Despite being nice and bright, the viewfinder is noticeably small and covers 95% of the scene, meaning the final image will contain a little bit more than you see through the viewfinder. Looking through the viewfinder you’ll find nine AF points spread across the screen that light up as red dots, depending on which is being used as a focus point. Basic shooting information – including shutter speed, aperture, metering and ISO – is displayed underneath the viewfinder. The camera is equipped with a great lens-sensor arrangement that allows you to take pictures across a wide spectrum of lighting conditions. This is also seen in the low light performance of the camera. Dimly lit subjects can be captured with minimum image noise and without resorting to the flash by changing ISO, bulb and shutter speed settings. The settings within the camera can be used to optimize the lighting levels around the subject in focus. The Canon EOS 1100D produced images of excellent quality during the review period. This camera produces noise-free images at ISO 100 all the way up to ISO 1600, with some noise appearing at ISO 3200 and more at the fastest setting of 6400. Image stabilisation via the kit lens is a feature that helps the EOS 1100D keep up with its competitors, and one that works very well when hand-holding the camera in low-light conditions or when using the telephoto end of the zoom range. The Canon EOS 1100D dealt very well with chromatic aberrations, with limited purple and cyan fringing effects appearing only at the edges of the photo in high contrast situations.

The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a small and light DSLR camera with an all-plastic shell, weighing in at just under 500g with the battery and memory card fitted and measuring 129.9 x 99.7 x 77.9 mm. In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 1100D / T3 feels more than solid enough for an entry-level DSLR, on par with the more expensive 600D but as you'd expect not in the same league as the semi-professional EOS 60D and 7D models. It has a narrow, mildly uncomfortable hand-grip that unfortunately doesn't have any textured surface to aid your grip, with the entire body finished in an appealingly glossy but rather too smooth finish. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 1100D / T3 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white mark. The 1110D can record images as lossless 14-bit Raw files (in Canon’s .CR2 format) or as compressed JPEG files, or indeed both simultaneously. JPEGs further benefit from a choice of Fine or Regular quality, with the sensor able to output a maximum 4272 x 2848 pixels at the full 12MP resolution. This can, of course, be lowered to suit your requirements with options to record JPEG images at 6.3MP, 3.4MP, 2.5MP and 0.3MP, again with a choice of Fine or Standard quality.
