About this deal

The boy’s favourite place was the local zoo. Grandpa would take his beloved grandson there every year as a special treat on Bob’s birthday. Together they would marvel at all the animals, and Grandpa would make up funny stories about how they got to look the way they did.

I actually think David Walliams is better than Roald Dahl. I know, I know. Roald Dahl is amazing, legend, one of a kind but David's books are genuinely good, kind, honest and most importantly wise. I will be always grateful for that. This book was released by the Harper Collins publishers in the year 2010. The story of this novel appears to be an extraordinary and touching description from author David, who had already faced success with his previous novels called Mr Stink and The Boy in the Dress. Nothing,” replied Bob. The boy didn’t want to get into trouble for stealing a free look at the animals. He wasn’t sure if that was a crime or not, but Bob hated getting into trouble. If you have a middle grade reader in your life, you have to get them some David Walliams novels. Trust me, they will absolutely love them. In fact, why not start them off with this one. There's no time like the present. Like most children (and some grown-ups), when Bob was told NOT to do something, it made him want to do it all the more.fn1 As an adult, I didn't particularly enjoy this, but listening as someone who needs to be aware of children's tastes and trends, I can't see this making waves as Walliams' comic efforts have done. While Alfie of course becomes a braver hero than he starts out as, it's a genre (or mix of) that is better suited to the adolescent who can deal with the more mature themes more comfortably. There is a lot here that will puzzle and put off.

As well as being a No.1 best-selling Children’s author, David Walliams is one of Britain's most popular writers and comic actors.Bob loved his grandpa, but life could be hard because they had no money. All Bob’s clothes were a size too small, and his shoes were falling apart. David has proved himself as a dramatic actor in BBC2's 'Capturing Mary' with Dame Maggie Smith, in BBC1's Agatha Christie series 'Partners In Crime', as Frankie Howerd in the biopic ‘Rather You Than Me’ for BBC4, and on the stage in Harold Pinter’s 'No Man’s Land' starring alongside Sir Michael Gambon. He received the Comedy Award at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance as Bottom in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ directed by Michael Grandage.

It was a major bonus that it was centered around a zoo too, which of course I loved, but with that setting, Walliams was also able to get the message out of not being cruel to animals (as well as each other), and the power of breaking down bullying was a strong theme. I love that the glossary informs you of the facts about the animals in the book, because he did make them do some rather preposterous things in the story!

But Bob just walked on by. He was much more interested in seeing the animals in the zoo who had no visitors crowding around them. These were the ones who many people thought were ugly. They were certainly odd-looking, and Bob found them fascinating. These were the ones he always loved visiting on his birthday trips to the zoo with Grandpa. There was:

But Bob didn’t like it one bit. Sometimes he thought having a funny face was the worst thing in the world. Added to all this, David’s books have achieved unprecedented critical acclaim: Awful Auntie, Ratburger and Demon Dentist won the National Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year and in France David was awarded the popular Tamtam for Mr Stink and the prestigious Le Prix Du Livre De La Jeunesse for Ratburger, so it comes as no surprise that countless broadsheet reviewers have compared David to his all-time hero, Roald Dahl. This is Grandpa. He has been told he has a funny face too. The old man loves his grandson very much, and all he wants is for Bob to be happy. Grandpa is very poor and wishes he had more money to treat his grandson to nice things, like days out together.

David Walliams and Tony Ross assert the moral right to be identified as the author and illustrator of this work. David Walliams has revolutionised reading for children and become one of the most influential children’s writers today. Since the publication of his ground-breaking first novel, The Boy in the Dress (2008), Walliams has seen unprecedented growth with global sales exceeding 32 million copies, and his books translated into 53 languages. Author David spent most of his growing years in Banstead, Surrey. He completed his schooling from the Collingwood Boys’s School, located in Wallington. He was also a student of the Reigate Grammar School, located in Surrey, where he used to be Robert Shearman’s contemporary. There is a lot to like about this book. It’s different and the concept is very topical - a dystopian vision of the future with greedy, despotic types in control of the country. And I thought that the story followed some interesting twists and turns. Sir Basil’s Zoo is home to animals of all shapes and sizes. There are many you might expect to see. Some of the most popular animals are:
