I love that the book, itself, is not obsessed with its plus-size main character. ... It's a shame that books like this are so few and far between." — NPR Filled with real-life examples, To Be Honest offers actionable steps, practical tools and approaches that any leader or manager can use to create a culture of purpose, honesty and justice.

To Be Honest: Lead with the Power of Truth, Justice and

I really enjoyed Savannah herself as a protagonist. I saw a lot of myself in her, both as a fat woman and just as a person. Her anxiety, her fears about the future, her love of school and her family… I just related to so much of her experience. Though she is plus-sized, she doesn’t hate her body or want to change it, and that isn’t her entire character. When these factors are absent or ineffective, the organizational conditions compel employees to choose dishonesty and self-interest. That being said, Savvy really does love her mom & since it’s just the two of them home now, she tries her hardest to not cause friction or let her mom’s comments get to her. We follow their relationship & the very real fights that take place leading to days of silence. Maggie Ann Martin also did a A+ job of showing us Savvy’s mom & her battle with body image. I felt terrible for her mom because you know she’s a good mom but life’s curve ball really threw her off & her self esteem really took a hit. I wanted so badly to see her mom get the help she so desperately needed & be a positive role model for Savvy.

My personal opinion about Michael doesn't much affect my opinion about the book. I thought it was an interesting and entertaining memoir, however I was expecting it to be a bit more humorous than it actually was. The writing was solid and technically good but it comes across as dry and sterile at times. Not what I would expect from a memoir. I wanted to feel more of his personality through the writing, not just the anecdotes. His music videos are very cool. “Summer’s the Worst” is a touching song! His singing at a Bar Mitzvah ( when he was younger), was hysterical. NONE OF THOSE 13 year old boys were listening to Michael sing his love song. Sooo funny!Under what conditions will people tell the truth, behave fairly and act with purpose at work? And when will they lie, cheat and be selfish? I’ve been in a huge YA mood lately, and To Be Honest really hit the spot. I listened to the audio book and the narrator was great. She voiced Savannah perfectly.
Savannah is a normal teen. She’s a little overweight, but it’s never bothered her. That is, until her mother went on a reality show for weight loss and everything changed in her house. Now, she’s being pressured constantly to eat a certain way. What I loved most about Savvy is that she could see beyond that and was able to stand up to her mom. I wish that the subplots (one about Savvy's journalism investigation and the other about Savvy's mother) had been better developed, but I think YA readers will enjoy this! Outside of Michael’s immediate family, the type of honesty that Michael had learned were having consequences. Teachers and students found his honest-bluntness unpleasant. As a reader I did too. (until I later fell in love with the guy).

We worked in a scared silence, taking a few moments longer to complete each task than necessary. If we admitted that we were done, we’d have to admit that it was time to leave. I don’t think Mom had good-bye on her epic list of dorm move-in responsibilities. No matter how many blogs she read or careful notes she took, nothing could prepare us for leaving. Pro: I really found George sort of adorable, and the scenes he shared with Savannah were precious. I loved his nerdy t-shirts, his pineapple pizza, and his musical prowess. It took everything within me not to add some extra hashtags, like #LoveYourBody or #AllBodiesAreGoodBodies.
