About this deal

I also learnt about this at school but the little penguin was scared because he had to be looked after by loads of other penguins because he's an Emperor penguin. A short and sweet book about a penguin cub named Otto who learns what it means to be patient and growing up.This resource focuses on identifying or creating contractions. A contraction is when two words have been combined to make one words using an apostrophe. Jill Tomlinson was an English children's writer, whose other book The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark is a wonderful tale that does what it says on the tin. This one is fairly similar, but it involves really annoying penguins who just can't seem to stop talking. I didn't find it half as endearing, which is a shame as it was written just as well, if not better, and the illustrations were wonderful. I thought it was great. I liked Leo and Otto more because they are honest. The chapter where it was true was ''Penguin Take Care of Each Other''. I would recommend it to someone else. Jill Tomlinson never intended to be a writer. She trained as an opera singer, and then decided to have a family whilst her voice matured. But illness intervened, and she had to find another outlet for her energies. She started on a journalism course, and by the third lesson decided she wanted to write for children. So she did!

What an utterly gorgeous book! I completely fell in love with Otto and his quest to make sense of his world. He's got that sweet sense of late toddlers, early pre-schoolers, who ask a million and one questions, are growing into their personalities and just make your heart sing every time you talk to them. When Otto says I have an asking sort of feeling in my tummy. What is it? you immediately think of every young child who's asked a question in a slightly off-kilter way. There are obvious parallels between a young penguin and a young child, but this isn't a cheesy anthropomorphic book - Otto's knowledge, desires, worldview, are all strongly penguin-related. It makes the story all the more real, all the more charming and all the more enjoyable. I thought this was a really amazing book, because Otto, a little baby penguin, was really wanting to find out everything about his part of the world. Otto lived at the bottom of the world. When he found out that he was a grown-up, he dived into the water, then did a big swoop and landed. It was really amazing.

We have differentiated this resources four ways for your KS1 class so you can choose which would best suit. Your KS1 class will read the sentences and decide which is the correct spelling within the context of the story.

I liked Otto because he is a cute penguin. When he was grown up he could slide on his tummy on the ice and I liked that. I think other people should read this book.
