Sure, it’s all plastic, but the chosen materials and design make the unit feel high-quality for the price you are paying for it. I didn’t detect any abnormal creaks in the casing during normal use. And again, if you want a little boost to these stats, I highly recommend swapping out the RAM. As you can see, I got better results across the board with my old RAM. If this is something you plan on doing, do some research on what RAM modules will perform better. There’s quite a community out there noticing this and it’s growing. This configuration on hand comes with an RTX 3070, although you can also get the 3060 or 3050 if you want to save some money. This top GPU has 8GB of VRAM, which should be plenty, especially considering the screen is only FHD. The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro gaming laptop doesn’t perform as well as it should out of the box, I will explain why and show you how gaming performance can be boosted with a 10% improvement!

Join for Free > Once opened, you get a good look at the screen, which is surrounded by a plastic bezel. The left and right bezels are pretty small, which is the standard nowadays. The top bezel is a little larger and the bottom bezel is twice the size. There’s a Legion logo centered on the bottom bezel and a standard webcam centered at the top. Pretty good results and it’s exactly what I was expecting, considering the plethora of Legion laptops I have reviewed in the past couple of months.The one thing that’s missing on this model is the kill switch on the right side of the laptop, like on other Legion models this year. Instead, there’s a physical shutter on the webcam itself. Better than nothing, but I prefer the kill switch since it completely disables it, including the audio. Battery life The display offers other benefits beside a bit less scrolling. Its image is crisp, bright, and fast with 2,560-by-1,600-pixel resolution, a brightness rating of 500 nits, and a 165Hz refresh rate. Colors in games and photos look vivid, and Nvidia's G-Sync technology matches the screen's refresh rate with GPU output for gameplay without tearing or stuttering. The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.6 °C / 109 F, compared to the average of 40.4 °C / 105 F, ranging from 21.2 to 68.8 °C for the class Gaming. On paper, this looks very similar to the Legion 5 I reviewed a few months ago. But in reality, there are some subtle differences that need to be pointed out, especially if you’re on the fence about choosing between the two sizes.

The best part about this webcam is the fact there’s a kill switch to disable it. Call me crazy, but I always wonder about these webcams pointing at my face all day, so I’m king of digging having a switch to physically disable it, when not needed. Battery life There’s a standard HD webcam on this model. It takes a decent picture but it’s nothing special at all. The colors are bland even in normal light and the low light correction is far from good. It passes for the occasional use I suppose and is better than not having one at all. There’s an HD webcam above the screen. It’s not a biometric webcam unfortunately, so that’s a real bummer. But it’s actually pretty decent as far as gaming webcams go. The colors certainly could be better. What really stood out to me was how sharp the image was even in low lighting. Verdict - Legion 5 15 convinces with display and high performance
If you want better, you can’t control the fans manually, which is unfortunate. But I did have some success using Ryzen Controller, which is a 3rd party software that is used to manually control the TDP or temperature limits of the CPU. I was able to use the software to throttle under specific temperature limits and TDP limits. Pretty impressive battery life, for a gaming laptop. I was able to type a pretty good amount of this review and do a lot of other stuff on a single charge. Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed. The Legion 5 Pro has an 80Whr battery, which is a pretty decent size. Judging from the inside, it doesn’t look like they had any more room for something bigger either.

I took a bunch of battery measurements, with Optimus on and with the screen set at 60% brightness, roughly 90 nits. Here were my results: QHD (2560 x 1600) IPS, 16:10, 500 nits, 165Hz / 3ms response time, 100% sRGB, VESA DisplayHDR™-certified, Dolby Vision™-enabled, NVIDIA ® G-SYNC ®, AMD Freesync™ I was thinking of buying this 3070 version to be able to keep it for a longer time, and still be able to play some what demanding games in the future. How would you rate the 3070 compared to 3060 version of this model in that context? The sound from the speakers is fine. Cranked all the way up, it can reach amplitudes as high as 80dB, which is good enough for streaming a show or something.

It’s a lot cooler than I expected and it’s mainly because the CPU fan stays at a low speed practically all the time. The constant air circulation does a lot to keep the chassis cool and the CPU at low temps. Fan noise hovers around 32dB, which is fine by me. This Legion 5 has an 80Whr battery, which is a pretty decent size. I’m sure it’s to be consistent with the other Legion models, but it would have been nicer to utilize that extra space and beef it up to 99Whr.

The hinges look shiny at first, but as one user pointed out in my Legion 5 15” review, it’s because they are coated in plastic film. You can choose to leave this if you want to preserve them for whatever reason. Removing it is kind of a pain in the butt because it requires opening and closing the lid multiple times to get to it all.With the exception of the 16″ screen, the overall case design and build quality is probably my favorite part of this laptop. It’s just plain excellent. Throughout my use, I didn’t notice any creaks or abnormalities that made it difficult or frustrating to handle. This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating. I also did some testing with a number of games. All these tests were done in performance mode in QHD and FHD at 16:10: We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image, timing each operation and adding up the total. As with Handbrake, lower times are better here. The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters, so systems with powerful graphics chips or cards may see a boost. If you’re dead set on getting a 17” screen and like the Legion series over everything else, I’d say this is a good buy at the 3050 and 3060 price points. But if you’re interested in getting the 3070 model I have on hand, I’d caution you against buying this unless you get a decent sale.
