Twenty-five million is only money?’ He shook his head slowly and then wonderingly as though he had heard a new truth spoken. ‘I suppose you are right.’ He smiled, gently now, the smile of affection for a well-loved friend. ‘Sorry, Ben. The sunbirds have counterparts in two very distantly related groups: the hummingbirds of the Americas and the honeyeaters of Australia. The resemblances are due to convergent evolution brought about by a similar nectar-feeding lifestyle. [2] Some sunbird species can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but they usually perch to feed. Sunbirds are a tropical Old World family, with representatives in Africa, Asia and Australasia. In Africa they are found mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar but are also distributed in Egypt. In Asia the group occurs along the coasts of the Red Sea as far north as Israel, and along the Mediterranean as far north as Beirut, with a gap in their distribution across inland Syria and Iraq, and resuming in Iran, from where the group occurs continuously as far as southern China and Indonesia. In Australasia the family occurs in New Guinea, north eastern Australia and the Solomon Islands. They are generally not found on oceanic islands, with the exception of the Seychelles. The greatest variety of species is found in Africa, where the group probably arose. Most species are sedentary or short-distance seasonal migrants. Sunbirds occur over the entire family's range, whereas the spiderhunters are restricted to Asia. [3] These birds are surprisingly adaptable, and also live in more urban areas. They readily move into agricultural areas, urban parks, and gardens. Distribution of the Sunbird Nectariniidae is a family of passerine birds in the superfamily Passeroidea, comprising the sunbirds and spiderhunters. [1] Members of Nectariniidae are also known as nectariniids. [2] Their range extends from the Afrotropics north to the Levant and southern Arabian Peninsula, and east through South and Southeast Asia up to New Guinea and northern Australia. [3] They inhabit a wide variety of habitats, from arid savannah to tropical rainforests, and can be found from sea level to an altitude of 4,900m (16,100ft). Sunbirds are generally small birds with long, thin, down-curved bills and brightly coloured, iridescent plumages. [2] They display marked sexual dimorphism, and males are much more visually striking than females, who are usually dull green, brown, or grey. The spiderhunters ( Arachnothera) are larger than other sunbirds and show less sexual dimorphism. [3]It’s only money, like the man said.’ And again that great bull laugh started me off. We went down the staircase roaring and tittering, each in his own way. Elated and hyper-tense, we faced each other in the hall. Hilary took my hand and led me out on to the wide flagged patio. Five acres of lawn and dazzling flowerbeds sloped gently down to the stream and artificial lake. Both tennis courts were occupied and a shrieking mob of small near-naked bodies thrashed the water of the swimming-pool to a sun-sparkled white. Two uniformed servants were laying out a cold buffet on the long patio trestle-table, and with a small squirming twinge of dread I saw a half-dozen young matrons in tennis dress sprawled in the lounging chairs beside the outside bar. They were flushed with exertion, perspiration dampened the crisp white dresses and they sipped at long dewy, fruit-laden glasses of Pimms No. 1. To describe what is sunbirds, they are small birds that come from the family of spiderhunters and have the common names: sunbird, spiderhunter. There are about 132 species of sunbirds that can be spotted in Asia, Africa and Australia. Sunbirds inhabit forests, gardens, savannas, coastal areas, open scrublands, plantations, and agricultural fields. It’s classic! Acropolis, double enclosure and the “phallic towers”.’ He was exaggerating, they were faint outlines, indistinct and in places disappearing, but the general shape and configuration were right. The bill is slender and curved, with a sharp point. The bill has a serrated tip to enable the sunbird to break into the corolla of the flower. Most feeding is done by poking the beak down into the flower. Other special adaptations Archeologist Ben Kasin has a theory about the arrival of white men in southern Africa. A theory that has been ridiculed by his peers in his field, but he just knows he is right. All he has to do is find the proof! Then his close friend Louren Sturvesant, a business man with worldwide prospects and money to burn, shows him a photograph that just might provide the proof Kasin needs. And of course with Louren's money and connections, the team is able to go exploring immediately.
