About this deal

When you apply polycrylic, you will need to apply thin coats and be mindful of drips. Its consistency is a lot thinner than polyurethane so drips and beading are more of an issue. You only need some soapy water to clean up polycrylic, which makes it easier to work with. And if money is a major concern, polycrylic is the more affordable option compared to polyurethane. When considering polycrylic vs polyurethane, the main thing is to decide on your project. This will determine which finish is best suited for the job. However, having both types of finish available could come in handy, as you never know when you might need one or the other. So, any quality varnish ( not water based ) thinned with mineral spirits is as good as it gets, at a fraction of the cost.. Once done and any blemishes have been removed, clean the surface thoroughly with a vacuum and then wipe with a soft cloth dampened with mineral spirits Polycrylic is both moisture and stain resistant; it can be applied to indoor and outdoor surfaces between temperatures of 5 and 90 degrees. It is also certified for USDA and FDA use, which makes it a great choice for kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Basically, if everyday wear and tear are an issue, go for the strongest, most durable finish. How to Get Polyurethane Off Hands The Validol, as well as others perhaps, lines the TE of the stab and rudder with 1/8" (or so) wide CF uni tow. The Tow provides better resistance to damage. CF matt basically absorbs a lot of resin and might not give you the desired strength. It works well, is competitively priced, and available in a multitude of finishes, colors, aerosols, and cans. Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish There are some alternatives to Polycrylic, but quite honestly, we would recommend using Polycrylic over all alternatives.

No, wiping is not appropriate. Once the first layer has been applied, sand with 220-grit to 320-grit paper. Use the same grit sandpaper between layers. The polycrylic dries fast, so you can easily do many coats during a single day. If you have a small surface to cover, polycrylic will work just fine. For a large surface, you will probably want to try polyurethane. Polycrylic goes on thinner, dries faster, and can be recoated sooner than polyurethane–which means you’ll spend less time between coats. And it delivers a harder, more durable finish that resists scratches, stains, and fading.

I have heard from a number of freeflight guys that the miniwax did not work as well as one might expect. I'll try to find what they now suggest. The big issue was warping of the solid balsa stabs after it has sit in the sun a while. Krylon combines rich color and superior resistance to fading in a line of artist-quality paints and finishes that deliver professional results every time. The Krylon Gallery process brings out the true life of brilliant colors in any mix for superior results in your next project. Bob Cleek If thinning down gloss Poly varnish gives a satin look, then Minwax Gloss wipe on poly is NOT simply thinned down Poly Varnish as @Gregory stated... if it was it would be Satin. 😋 Krylon sprays your artwork with a protective layer of a durable, matte finish. Great for crafts, outdoor projects, and home décor items such as signs and frames, this spray paint dries to the touch in 30 minutes and cures fully in one hour. The 12-oz can is ideal for smaller DIY projects. When dry, American DuraClear Varnishes provide a hard, protective finish that resists scratches and offers color retention.
