About this deal

Dan Miller is a professional toolmaker with extensive experience in the metalworking and tooling industry. For a long time, I've been looking for silicone tube storage ideas, but couldn't find what I was looking for. However, recently, while organizing my workshop, I came up with a solution. Again, a bottom shelf isn't entirely necessary, but I had a huge amount of spare spouts, or nozzles, if you will. So it made sense to give them a home. An easy DIY silicone tube holder made of offcuts and fitted in a workshop between shed spars. It's perfect for sealants, caulks and glues, with the option to hang a silicone tube gun on the side and spare nozzles in a shelf at the bottom. As a general rule start small, around 6-8 mm for a small bead. Test and snip again if needed. Use a Stanley knife to cut the tip of the nozzle, cutting away from your body and hands. 6. Caulking: 11 tips for a smooth and professional finish

If you have a lot of caulking, a caulking gun that offers more support with a larger handle is best (Image credit: Getty Images) 4. Choose the right caulk or silicone for the job Typically you cut the tip at an angle as this makes it easier to apply to whatever surface you are working with. How far down the nozzle you cut determines the size of the bead. The further down, the larger the flow of caulk or sealant will be. Exceptions include acrylic caulk that has been formulated to resist UV rays and strengthened to hold up against the elements. Plus, painting over the caulk will provide protection until the paint wears down. How to Store or Save Caulk After Use? If you are using caulk with no intention to paint over it, then you should look for the color that best matches the surrounding materials. It may be possible to mix the same type and brand of caulk together to create new colors, but that would take extra effort. What Is Caulk Used For?If you don't have an impact driver, you can predrill and screw the strips to the spar. Or, if using thin screws and not close to the end of timber, you can usually get away with no predrilling. Cap your caulk ready for the next job Manual caulking guns are inexpensive and quite durable when used properly. The downside is that for long sessions of caulking, particularly if caulking is part of your daily job, can be quite taxing. The caulk takes effort to push out the tip even with the manual caulking gun. Whether you choose caulk or silicone is dependent on the job (Image credit: Future/Steven Jenkins) 5. Snip the tip at an angle and start small When doing repair works, remove the old sealing and thoroughly clean the surface for the caulk to adhere properly. Caulking over the old silicone is never a good idea. Effects of Weather & UV Rays

If you're worried about it being too heavy, then you can also screw a nogging between both spars for the caulk holder to rest on and ease some weight. However, I don't think this is necessary with the amount of screws I used! Every workshop storage solution helps, which I later found this section useful for my paper towel rolls. The only caveat is that you should perform such repairs when it is dry and not expected to rain until the caulk has dried for maximum effectiveness. 6. Smoothing Out Surfaces

Using tape will give you smart, crisp edges (Image credit: Getty Images) 7. Caulk like a pro with even speed and pressure Ultraviolet light or UV rays and the elements can affect even the strongest caulk. The continual exposure over time will break down even the strongest caulk. However, silicone caulk is far more resistant than acrylic caulk. Caulk is mainly made from one of two types of materials, silicone and acrylic. You can also get polyurethane caulk and rubber-based caulk such as Flexshot. Silicone is quite good in bathrooms, especially when sealing the bathtub from the interior wall. This area is noted for its moisture but also does not normally need to be painted. However, acrylic caulk that has been modified may be used in the bathroom and kitchen if you want to paint the surface. Caulk Colors The dried caulk acts as a smooth buffer that works well for lighter items, but probably not heavy ones like your sofa. 5. Roof Repair

You can’t place new caulk on top of old caulk, especially if it is in poor condition. So to get the best finish you need to remove the old caulk. For example, if you are caulking skirting boards you can use a Stanley knife – cut as close to the edges as possible and pull out. One of the most annoying issues with placing wallpaper is that it tends to pull up when drying. However, if you run a line of caulk across the paper seams and especially along the corners, then smooth it out using a wet finger or sponge that will keep the wallpaper in place.Free. I had everything in already and now have an organized silicone wall, along with more room in my workshop due to using up offcuts! More Projects You Might Like
