About this deal

In Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup, Krum's appearance is much closer to the book's description since the game had been made before the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire film. Krum has long, dark brown hair, a curved nose, and a fairly slim build. Since Cedric Diggory also appears in the game, the game probably takes place in the 1993 season, meaning Krum was 17 at the time. Karkaroff was described to be tall and thin like Albus Dumbledore, but with an unctuously cheerful demeanour, while his smile 'didn't reach his eyes', which were blue and remained cold and unmoving. [14] This made him slightly unnerving. His weak chin was not completely covered by his goatee, which ended with a small curl. His teeth were yellow and he liked to dress in sleek, silver furs. As a former Death Eater, he bore the Dark Mark on his left inner forearm. It is possible that the wand entry on Pottermore may be a reference to Krum's wand, as Ollivander states that hornbeam wands generally lean towards wizards with a lifelong obsession. Krum is said to be obsessed with Quidditch. Like Madame Maxime, the Headmistress of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Karkaroff was outraged when Harry Potter's name was chosen from the Goblet of Fire, giving Hogwarts two champions instead of one. While he had to accept Harry's presence in the competition, he consistently gave Harry lower scores on the tasks and blatantly favoured Krum over the other champions. He also sneaked around to gather information on the tasks in hopes of giving Krum an advantage. Krum joins Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Entrance Hall to say goodbye to Hermione. He asks to speak to Hermione alone, and the pair walk away from the crowd and out of sight. When the pair return soon after, Krum tells Harry that he liked Cedric Diggory; the boy was always polite to Krum, even though he was from Durmstrang. Krum scowls as Harry asks whether they have a new headmaster yet, and shrugs indifferently. He is surprised but gratified when, just as he is walking away, Ron asks for his autograph, and signs a fragment of parchment for him.

Over time, J K Rowling has revealed more details about the Harry Pottercharacter wands and what they mean - including those of the Fantastic Beasts cast. Early on in the series, it's established that the wand chooses the wizard, and Harry finds this out firsthand in The Sorcerer's Stone when he goes to visit Ollivander's wand shop in Diagon Alley for the first time. In the wizarding world, wands are indispensable objects, used for everything from combat to household chores. Students learn how to wield these tools with finesse during their time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, though some show more outright skill than others, leading to a few explosive moments, courtesy of one Seamus Finnegan. In the first Task of the Tournament, Krum uses the Conjunctivitus curse on his dragon to allow him to get past it and steal the Golden Egg. The dragon, enraged, flails around and breaks some of its own eggs, which costs him points; however, he comes out of the First Task with 40 points, tied for first with Harry.

Following the Ball, Hermione and Viktor continued to see each other. Viktor, who was usually taciturn, spoke enthusiastically to Hermione, who became so engrossed in their conversations that at one point, she seemed to forget she was eating. Hermione later became the hostage for Viktor to retrieve for the Second Task of the Tournament. Following the Task, Viktor told Hermione that he had never felt about a girl like the way he felt about her, and invited her to Bulgaria to visit him during the summer. His membership in the Death Eater organisation and implementation — or, at least, continuation — of a policy of refusing to admit Muggle-borns to Durmstrang, indicated that Karkaroff was prejudiced against those of different blood status (though if so he had did not seem to have the level of sadistic, genocidal hatred possessed by other Death Eaters such as Bellatrix Lestrange and Yaxley). Nevertheless, Karkaroff was (at least during his time with the Death Eaters), something of a sadist, as he was noted to have assisted Dolohov in torturing Muggles, and even after he 'reformed' during his headship of Durmstrang, he encouraged an environment where intimidation and fear rule over the school, leading parents to see him as unprincipled and egotistical. Even his warm greeting to Albus Dumbledore when he came to Hogwarts was less proof of a civil nature, and more proof of his ability to play at civility when it suited him. This is supported by his later yelling at Dumbledore after Harry Potter's name came out of the Goblet of Fire, and even spitting at his feet. [14]Krum waits at the judges table by the lake, waiting for the second task to begin. Krum attempts to Transfigure himself into a shark for the task, to allow him to breathe underwater. He is partially successful, but it is not a good Transfiguration: he retains his human body, but has the head of a shark. His new teeth are positioned very badly for biting anything smaller than a dolphin, and he is in danger of harming Hermione as he tries to bite at her ropes. Krum is hit on the shoulder by Harry, who hands him a jagged stone; seizing it, Krum begins to cut Hermione free from the statue of the merperson. Once she is free, Krum grabs her around the waist and swims towards the surface of the lake. Krum is the second champion to return with their hostage. He is awarded forty points for the task.

Karkar is a name which was common among Kipchaks [21], a Turkic tribe which inhabited today's Kazakhstan during ca. 10-12c.; '-off' is a possessive suffix meaning '[son] of' in Slavic languages turning a given name into a surname which was also attached to non-Slavic names as part of Russification policies in the former USSR. Based on his name, Karkaroff was most likely from a Slavic country, which may have been either Russia or Bulgaria where surnames with the off -suffix are most commonly found.

References from the canon

While the extent of his magical skills is unknown, Karkaroff must have been a skilled wizard, given that he was the Headmaster of Durmstrang as well as a former Death Eater. His skills were such that he was able to evade the likes of Alastor Moody and even Lord Voldemort himself for extended periods of time. [14]

I liked Diggory. He vos alvays polite to me. Alvays. Even though I vos from Durmstrang — with Karkaroff." — Viktor regarding Cedric after he was murdered [src] Based on the fact that Durmstrang does not admit Muggle-borns as students, which makes it unlikely that they would admit them as professors or headmasters either. Karkaroff was also a member of the Death Eaters organisation, which was dedicated to eliminating Muggle-borns. A skilled Quidditch Seeker, Viktor was selected to play for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team despite still being at school, and was widely regarded as one of the best players in the world. In 1994, he played in the Quidditch World Cup, and helped Bulgaria reach the final against the Irish National Quidditch team. And Krum — you won’t believe this, but he didn’t even think of flying! He was probably the best after you, though. Hit it with some sort of spell right in the eye. Only thing is, it went trampling around in agony and squashed half the real eggs — they took marks off for that, he wasn’t supposed to do any damage to them." — Ron Weasley telling Harry Potter about Krum's performance in the First Task [src]Ron Weasley is jealous of Viktor's relationship with Hermione, yet he has to grudgingly admit that he is a fan of Viktor as a Quidditch player. Nonverbal magic: Karkaroff once summoned a number four in the sky after the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament to evaluate Harry Potter's performance without saying an incantation, showing he was skilled with nonverbal spells.
