About this deal

Tanzania's major coffee growing regions include Arusha (Meru), the Moshi district (on the slopes of Kilimanjaro), Oldeani (in the Arusha region), and Pare, the high plateau between Lake Taganyika and Lake Nyassa as well as Songea, the capital of the Ruvuma region of southeastern Tanzania where the Ruvuma River forms most of the southern boundary with Mozambique. Many people would love it if peaberry coffee beans could be guaranteed in a crop as they fetch a higher price and are widely considered amongst the world’s best coffee beans. However, whilst many prefer the sweeter taste, there are plenty of non-believers who say there is no difference in flavor. If a roaster uses beans that are all different sizes, chances are that some of the beans will end up over-developed, while others might be under-developed. Over-developed beans will taste like the roast, otherwise known as ‘roasty’. Under-developed beans will present grass and hay flavor notes in the cup. Coffee beans come from the coffee cherry. The coffee cherry has a thin layer of pulpy fruit on the outside and two seeds on the inside. The two seeds are round on the outside and flat on the side facing each other. Keremba says: “In the north, harvest runs from July to December, and the same is true in the south. However, in the west, harvest runs from May to October.”

Before these changes, both private buyers and exporters could buy both cherry and parchment, alongside co-operatives purchasing them from individual farmers. However, the new regulations stipulated that only co-operatives could buy cherry and parchment. Honestly, we think the idea of a nutrient-hogging “super bean” might be a little far fetched. However, claims that the peaberries of a batch are brighter, juicer, or sweeter in flavor are pretty reasonable. Peaberries do tend to have a different flavor profile than their flat brethren due to the highly selective process we describe above. Good question. It’s awesome. Coffee beans are the seed of a fruit , commonly referred to as a coffee cherry. This small, fleshy fruit can vary in color based on its variety, but is most often yellow or red when ripe. What is green coffee beans? Fresh Roasted’s Tanzanian Peaberry is farmed in the Mbeya region in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. This area is Tanzania’s biggest Arabica producer, and it is the 100% Bourbon Arabica beans that the peaberries are sourced from.As mentioned above, Tanzania is known for its peaberry coffee. Peaberries are normally separated and sorted from the rest of the crop during harvest and they are often sold as a higher grade of coffee bean. As you can imagine, the process is quite labour intensive, which could also be contributing to its higher-grade status. Tanzanian coffee possesses an intense and vibrant sourness akin to the Kenyan coffee grown in neighboring Kenya. However, Tanzanian coffee has a creamy, smooth and buttery body and leaves a long-lasting taste. The Tanzania Peaberry coffee seeds are two times as vibrant and have more refined flavors – you can anticipate getting more prominent fruity notes and traces of cedar. The coffee plant varietals most commonly grown in Tanzania include Bourbon, Typica/Nyara, Blue Mountain, and Kent cultivars.

However, since the late 1990s, production figures have stagnated and fallen in various parts of the country, settling somewhere around 50,000 metric tonnes. They reached a brief peak in the mid-2000s, but broadly speaking, the industry is struggling to increase its production volumes.Well, firstly, the Tanzanian coffee we currently have on offer is from here. As you know, we never chose coffees just for the sake of it; there is always a reason (in fact usually more than one) why we are attracted to a particular coffee and/or origin. Here I go!

We see peaberry coffees coming from all over the world. They aren’t super common because not all producers put in this work of separating them from the bulk of the harvest. Robusta, however, makes up the remaining 30%. “This is produced primarily in the Kagera region, in the north west of the country, by the shores of Lake Victoria,” Keremba explains. McDonald’s uses 100% Arabica Coffee beans as opposed to Robusta. Arabica is known for its smooth and consistent flavor. It appeals to the masses due to its drinkability, moderate caffeine content, and versatile pairing with many foods. Needless to say, it’s clear why McDonald’s would choose such a coffee bean. Which coffee has the most caffeine in?Important notes: The 100% Kona coffee as peaberries has been dubbed the “champagne of Kona” Buy Now British colonists tried to expand the coffee industry in the country, spreading coffee to the West in an attempt to increase production. This attempt was largely unsuccessful— production didn’t increase until much later. A large number of older coffee trees in Tanzania are not capable of realising their full potential of yields,” he says. “Farmers are paying the price for it.

Many co-operatives own these units,” Keremba says. “Some of the members carry out a level of home processing before delivering it to these societies. Coffee plants were first introduced to Tanzania from Ethiopia around the 16th century. The warm temperature with humid climate, volcanic soil and the high altitudes of Mount Kilimanjaro were ideal for the plant’s growth. Tanzania Peaberry Coffee Taste and Flavors Part of the rationale as to why peaberry coffee beans are “higher quality” than regular whole bean coffee is that the seeds don’t have to share the energy and goodness with a twin. So, it has more deliciousness. In theory, this is perfectly sensible and logical but the reality is wild variations between growing conditions, processing, and roasting meaning varying quality.Yet while every farm has the potential to produce peaberry beans, not all go to the effort to separate these seeds from the rest of the harvest. Peaberry coffee beans are a natural mutation of the coffee beans inside the cherry. So, to understand how peaberry coffee beans are different to ‘normal’ ones, I am going to briefly go through the coffee cherry anatomy – apologies if I am stating the obvious for some! Tanzania along with its neighbouring Kenya and exotic Hawaii are also known for exporting Peaberry coffee.
