in short: truly a wretched film: dishonest, ambtious, pretentious, pseudo-intellectual. i suppose if you're a lapsed catholic with vague leftist leanings and no real intellectutal or moral spine--and suffering a life long existential crisis-- it might appeal. Sergio Castellitto è Timoteo; chirurgo frustrato e infelice. Sente che la sua vita con Elsa non è felice e dopo aver violentato Italia, se ne innamora perdutamente ritrovando in lei la gioia e la voglia di vivere. The characters start out from the get go freighted with way too much symbolism before they finally just become moving and well-acted participants in a sad affair.

Just to get an idea of her greatness in this movie, here are actor-director Sergio Castellitto's words at the press conference for the movie, which took place in Rome on March 9th: La storia e i personaggi mi hanno preso, nonostante alcuni momenti di odio puro, in cui avrei voluto buttare il libro dalla finestra. Forse perché erano momenti troppo forti, e disturbanti, che mi hanno urtato, facendomi quindi odiare il libro. Forse non era il momento giusto per leggerlo, chi lo sa. Ma questa storia d'amore intensa, viscerale, da far male per me è stato troppo. Leggere i pensieri di quest’uomo, leggere le sue brutture, mi ha fatto torcere le budella. Non volevo immedesimarmi in lui. Per nulla. Però allo stesso tempo l’ho amato, e voi direte che sono matta, lo so, ma il bello è proprio questo turbinio di emozioni che si provano insieme al protagonista, talmente si è connessi con lui. Emozioni che lo portano a fare e dire cose che non avrebbe mai fatto, nel bene e nel male, e che personalmente mi hanno lacerato e fatto arrabbiare. in any case, it's another example of the dishonesty of a film which wants to be taken as a character study but in fact is esssentially an exploitation drama with an antonioni delusion. the characters, incidently are paper thin, though penelope cruz does an admirable job presenting the surface characteristics of this updated "gelsomina/virgin/waif" stererotype. and claudia gerini (as the rapist's wife) deserves serious praise for making the most of a criminally underwritten role. sergio castellitto-- normally a very watchable actor-- does remarkably little with his role here as the surgeon/rapist. it's as though the strain of exhibiting his sexual energies and urinary prowess had left him bereft of his usual acting skill and common sense. Inoltre, il nostro Timoteo (alias padre-in-pena-?), in qualche passaggio, è troppo esplicito e morbosamente dettagliato nelle sue descrizioni intime; troppo confidente nel parlare di sesso, stupro, capezzoli e parti intime… Ricordo che finzione vuole che il protagonista si stia rivolgendo alla figlia (punto primo) quindicenne (punto secondo) in fin di vita (terzo punto).

Nella colonna sonora sono presenti brani di Leonard Cohen, Nino Buonocore, Toto Cutugno, Europe e Vasco Rossi, quest'ultimo con la canzone Un senso. Le musiche sono state affidate a Lucio Godoy, compositore di origine argentina, autore tra l'altro delle colonne sonore per film I lunedì al sole (2003) e Melissa P. (2005).

E se prendete queste due preghiere e le intrecciate come i fili di una treccia otterrete la storia struggente che Margaret Mazzantini ha messo in piedi con maestria, un tocco magico delle parole, dure quando si parla di sesso, forti quando si parla di amore, e dolci, incredibilmente dolci e profonde, quando si tratta di paura paterna. In Don’t Move, love and abjection are always simultaneously present and love, in particular, “is not structured as an elevated experience outside of the material world, but rather […] descends into the body, where it becomes part of the material world, neither separate from the body nor accessed through the body, but entwined with the corporeal world and subject to its degradations” (Toscano 11-12). In Australia we are fortunate to have 3 or 4 festivals each year showcasing the latest films from France, Germany, Greece and Italy. "Don't look Now" is screening as part of the Italian one I watch mainly French and Italian films from the 40s-80s, and I think it is bizarre to compare this film with Fellini or other art films. I found it more on the level of L'Ultimo Bacio -- actually a hardcore version of that film, without the fun and cuteness, and with weaker female characters. Ho comprato per 1€ la storia di Timoteo e Italia, munita del mio obolo sacrificale sono scesa nell’Inferno delle emozioni sature di un chirurgo in vista e della sua donna dei sobborghi che puzza di povero e che sa di amore.Tutto gli sfugge di mano come se uno spirito cattivello si fosse impossessato di lui… Chi è causa del suo mal, pianga se stesso.
