About this deal

Were there any hurdles or special considerations you had to undertake to adapt MIERUKO-CHAN into an anime? Initially, the series started with a somewhat simple concept. Was it difficult to expand on that idea in the earlier episodes? normal” life is indeed hard as nails and horrifying, I cry inside silently every day for hours. I felt the premise in my bones and I was not disappointed, the mood and the irony of the unending utter terror Mieruko-chan must at all costs contain felt fresh and delicious. Interestingly it’s what most seers actually do, from what I know. No one has no time to deal with hostile astral entities, so they screen, tone down, and hide. Final thing it gets right is that extra chapter. I won't spoil it, but I will say it added a sentimental touch that was pulled off well, and didn't feel like a cheat. Then we have Miko the MC herself. Miko is cute, determined and a great MC with a strong mental fortitude/resilience. Despite her extreme fears, she remains determined to maintain a normal life, even if she’s constantly denying the spirits/ghosts around her. She endures constant paranormal encounters every time, from scary apparitions to unsettling/creepy whispers, without losing her composure entirely.

These monsters whose origin is still to be determined, are drawn in the most horrifying way possible. The designs are vague, as they are mostly deformed masses of flesh with some eyes and mouths thrown in there for good measure, but they get the job done in two levels: 1) It scares the living hell out of our heroine and 2) they make for an interesting visual contrast between the horrific monsters and the girls that are drawn in the most attractive way possible (and in the first few chapters, with a lot of fan-service thrown there for good measure).

IZUMI: There's nothing I could honestly classify as an experience, but since I'm a coward I don't go near scary-looking places. I'm also not very observant when it comes to these things, so even if I did see something I might not even notice. It gets better as it goes. I didn’t love the initial chapters - I can go another lifetime without seeing spirits made entirely of hands copping a feel on somebody and them not noticing. As I alluded to, there’s a lot of odd sexual moments in the depiction of the spirits - there’s a story about a couple who clearly deserve one another that is... phew... yep. That’s sure a design.

Lastly, there are some very misguided comparisons floating around between Mieruko-chan and Natsume's Book of Friends. The idea is so wonderfully asinine it deserves its own paragraph in this already long review. So let's get this straight: the two are nothing alike beyond the most surface-level similarity. Natsume is a very kind-hearted series with a pronounced feel-good vibe and a great deal of respect shown to all of its characters. And while it also tends to succumb to the "monster of the week" formula with little to no overarching development, the protagonist shows a great deal of agency in how he goes about solving the issues he is presented with in almost every case, with his friends meaningfully supporting him. Miko doesn't: she's just passively drifting along the similarly episodic plot, doing little other than getting distressed (with no lasting effects) and showing ass—and being none the wiser for it. It doesn't feel good, it doesn't feel appropriate, it's mean-spirited in both form and spirit. Only that Sadako book keeps this from being the weirdest thing I read all week. I think this is meant to be a comedy, given most endings of the various chapters, and it’s amusing at points, but it’s also really bizarre. The stories follow a basic pattern of Miko hoping something doesn’t show up and then being discomfited when it inevitably does. This first volume gets three things majorly right. First off, it is funny. I genuinely laughed several times while reading it as Mieruko sees something and does her absolute best to ignore it... which leads me to the second. The ghosts are horrific. I mean seriously... wow. In a way this adds to the comedy as she has to look at these things and just keep moving on as if nothing is happening, but seriously, some of these are the things of nightmares. In a large lore dump over a meal at the diner, we find out that Mitsue knows about the spirits and that Miko can see them. She promised to help teach Miko how to control her abilities. It seems like the old woman is more than just about prayer beads....Pineda, Rafael Antonio (July 3, 2020). "Yen Press Licenses Unnamed Memory, 5 Other Novels, 6 Manga". Anime News Network . The manga is well-paced, with well-crafted suspense, and provides both horrifying and humorous moments for its creativity to keep the reader engaged. The stories vary in length and tone, offering an actual progression and development of its world mix of short self-contained encounters and longer suspenseful arc-driven narratives. The malice. Again, it is difficult to experess it believably, but the designs are just so fully realized and so strong, that you don’t need to make any effort to feel that they are scary, you don’t need to be understanding or to suspend your disbelief – the scary comes naturally. These are mean terrifying bad bad things you never want to meet, you can’t do anything about, you just can’t – yet here they are in all the disturbing glory. Mieruko-chan | Watch on Funimation". Now mind you the story while filled with ghastly ghost beings of various degrees of realism and strange shapes this is not entirely a horror story as those around Miko continue to live their lives regardless of Miko trying to keep her cool with strange things around her. In fact some of the best parts of the book that I enjoyed were not the very expressive character reactions or the monster like beings that fuel Miko's nightmares but the times when her ability to see ghosts turns out beneficial like when she and her friend find an abandoned kitten and find it a new home or a particular scene at the end of the book which was super touching. If you want to find out more I guess you will have to read it for yourself. :) MIERUKO-CHAN was originally started as an internet series. When did the concept of “a girl who pretends she cannot see scary ghosts” come to you? So, what about the story? What makes it so great? I'll try to be as generic as I can to avoid spoiling anything. Initially, the story begins with the main character starting to experience paranormal activities and acting accordingly to make them stop, but as time goes on the focus shifts more on the characters growth and it makes it so that you can relate to them on what they're feeling and thinking in almost every situation. To put it simply, reading this manga feels like reading about a person trying to overcome a mental illness through a journey full of hardships and to me this is marvellous and a bit poetic. a b "Mieruko-chan". The whole premise of "a girl sees spooky ghosts and is scared but keeps her cool" sounds like something that would wear itself thin almost immediately—and indeed, that is exactly what happens! The At first, it does really seem initially aimless. The art is pretty much the only good part. There's some fanservice, but nothing out of control (sadly the anime adaptation does exaggerate it). At first, I was only reading because I thought the art was good and I wanted to see what kind of monster designs and strange scenarios the author would come up with, but later, I Miko’s been saved by the shrine maidens three times, fulfilling their implied contract with her. But now that she has no defence against the spirits she’s seeing, what lengths will she go to to make sure she’s safe?
