As a result, it gives lots of wonderful energy to songs that utilize sub frequencies as methods of creating emotional impact. It does a great job of making the lows sound big without getting in the way or clouding up the low-mids. For example, when I was listening to the song Didn’t Cha Know by Erykah Badu, the high-hat had emphasis, but felt less chunky than usual. It was emphasized more toward the upper treble and octave. Additionally, the hand drum had a slightly different shape than usual, but maintained a good balance in the mix. Lastly, Erykah’s vocal had nice detail and had good audible air during the “oo”s and “hey”s. Soundstage It’s almost annoying how predictably reliable Sennheiser’s headphones are. In this price range, the brand offers nothing flashy. Just skillful, well-balanced sound. Now, Sennheiser has introduced two new affordable HD models, which are successors to the HD 4.20. What can you expect in terms of sound signature and performance? Let’s take a look in this Sennheiser HD 400S Review. IN the BOX Sennheiser aimed to be balanced when designing the HD 400S. The bass range doesn’t leave me wanting more but also isn’t overpowering. It has a nice balance that works well with all genres. While bass parts tend to be more clear than warm, this is still very good for a headphone at this price. I was impressed by the lows and how well they were able to deliver clean and balanced bass. Mids The Sennheiser HD 400s headphone features a sensitivity of 120 dB and an impedance of 18 Ω. With a total harmonic distortion of 0.5 %, this headphone delivers clear sound quality. The cable length of 1.4 meters makes it easy to use with various devices. Featuring a closed acoustic system, this headphone gives an immersive sound experience. Testing out some violin solos in this range, there was a decent amount of transparency mixed in with a touch of smoothness. In the highest registers, there was minimal piercing or sibilance, so these cans work well for long listening sessions. Soundstage The middle frequencies of the Sennheiser HD400S have a little bit of a low mid boost around what sounds like 300 Hz. As a result, bass guitars, pianos, electric guitars, and strings have a nice base. However, I wouldn’t describe this feeling as a feeling of body. On the contrary, a cut around 1 kHz followed by a boost in the high mids gives these headphones a little bit of a smiley face curve in the midrange. As a result, it doesn’t feel cloudy at all, but it skews the levels of midrange instruments in the mix. Because of the high mid boost, vocals tend to sit a bit louder in the mix. Placing the headphones on my head, they have a comfortable yet secure clamping force. Additionally, on the underside of the headband is a thin piece of padding. A Great Value! – Sennheiser HD400S Review In the BoxFor example, when I was listening to the song Daydreaming by Middle Brother, the stringiness of the acoustic guitar felt emphasized over its body. Additionally, while the electric guitar had a sense of midrange, it leaned a bit toward the high mids. It was able to maintain its sense of harmonic complexity, but had a particular sense of clarity. For other genres, this may have felt somewhat thin, but for this genre it worked quite well. Lastly, the vocal sounded louder in the mix than usual, and stepped forward in the soundstage as well. High Frequencies The bass is somewhat isolated from the rest of the signature and is really good in itself. Powerful with emphasis in the subrange, without exaggerating it. For driving beats or hip-hop a fun affair and quite detailed. But the mids are the deal breaker on the H400s. These are very unbalanced and especially voices are sometimes hard to bear as they can get very shrill. In general the H400S is too bright and tonally inconsistent. The trebles also don't have a big extension and sometimes sound a bit tinny.

Like all of Sennheiser’s stuff, the build quality on the 400S looks pretty solid. And because the cable is detachable, it can easily be replaced if it eventually fails on you. Add to that a 2 year warranty, and you should be safe for a while. One of the main considerations Sennheiser had for the HD 400S was its context of use. These headphones have a very low impedance, making them perfect for mobile devices that might not have the power to drive more resistant headphones. The driver is still of Sennheiser’s own design and can balance clarity with power. The detachable cable features a control unit with a built-in mic of excellent quality, especially for calls.

The high frequencies of the Sennheiser HD400S have emphasis in various places across the lower treble, upper treble, and upper octave. However, it also has a cut around what sounds like 9 kHz. As a result, the highs have a unique shape that is able to give detail to high frequency instruments while avoiding sibilance. Although the earpads seem too small for over-ears, they are very ergonomic and manage to be very comfortable for hours with a mixture of lay-on (in front of the ear) and ear wrap (behind the ear). In addition, they have a robust design with enough twist room for the ear cups and adequate padding, although the headband is somewhat uncomfortable. Although you can’t call the fit luxurious, the earpads were perfectly comfortable and unobtrusive on my ears. And it’s got a snug feel, while avoiding being too tight on the head. I also wear glasses, and the cans didn’t tilt them in any direction. Sound isolation is less than fantastic, though it will kill a little ambient hum. Tapped twice, you can also call on Siri or Google Assistant for voice guidance instructions.

Sennheiser has done it again. The HD 400S performs well beyond its price range and is one of the better budget model headphones I’ve tried. It has very few bells and whistles and offers a simple means of listening that still delivers amazing clarity and quality. If you need a good first pair of headphones or need something that you can take out of the house, then the HD 400S is definitely for you. The soundstage of the Sennheiser HD400S had a nice feeling of contrast in the height and width domains. It had a strong phantom center, which contrasted well with instruments panned out wide. Additionally, the height felt tall and deep with the sub energy in my chest complimenting the difference in the brighter, airer parts of the high frequencies. The sense of depth was skewed a bit due to the high mid boost, but came through depending on how it the mix used soundstage. The Sennheiser HD 400s headphone is a wired headphone with a supraaural ear coupling. It does not feature a noise-canceling microphone. The maximum sound pressure level of 120 dB makes it perfect for listening to music, watching movies, and playing games without any distortion.
