The gap between the mantel and the trim was filled with caulk, and the nail holes were filled with putty before the entire fireplace was painted. If you want an inside return and an outside return on your trim- adding an outside return will reduce how far the inside return goes into the wall cavity. As an example, if the outside return is 20mm and you want 50mm of the inside return to go into the wall cavity you will require an inside return of (50mm + 20mm) = 70mm.The minimum inside return size is 10mm With the mantel fixed, it's time to make it pretty! Usually you would install crown moulding under the mantel, but it can be difficult to find the right size for this narrow space. Just a short message to say we have installed the new white fire surround and we are delighted. Thank you, it's lovely.

If you want this for a Gas fire it is really only suitable for the tray inset type and finishes off the fire opening.
When we refer to WALL OPENING WIDTH and WALL OPENING HEIGHT measurements- We are always referring to the size of the hole in your wall. When you provide us this measurement we will make the trim very slightly smaller (but a snug fit). Measure the overhang of your mantel, and look for crown moulding or trim with a projection that's smaller than the overhang.
