About this deal

Prof Grahame Webb, chair of the International Union for Conservation of Nature crocodile specialist group, told the Guardian crocodile farming had helped fund conservation efforts in the region. In 2015, Burns helped the Northern Territory government develop a strategy to expand the region’s crocodile farming industry. Burns did not respond to a request for comment. Guardian Australia sent questions to Hermès and asked to speak to a representative, but did not get a response.

We have strategically selected Darwin as a mango-growing region to extend the start of Honey Gold season and meet consumer demand for quality, Australian mangoes. A small team is employed to develop the Darwin mango farm. All cardboard is flattened and used as part of our mulching regime and as a natural weed barrier in pathways. Darwin Orchard

Nicola Beynon, of Humane Society International, said brands including Chanel, Mulberry and the owners of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger had adopted animal welfare policies “against using exotic animal skins such as crocodile”. Cultivating confidence The warm and humid coastal climate of the Darwin region, which experiences cooler summers and warmer winters than other Top End growing regions by several degrees, promotes earlier mango flowering and fruit set, resulting in an earlier harvest than other regions. Dr Jed Goodfellow, a senior policy officer at RSPCA Australia, said the society remained opposed to killing of any animal “where the purpose of their death is primarily to produce a non-essential luxury item like fur or skin”. That report said that in 2015 that Australia accounted for 60% of world trade in saltwater crocodile skins, with the territory responsible for two thirds of traded skins. Webb said the scale of the new proposal from Burns suggested it would be able to produce about 15,000 crocodile skins a year. The harvesting of eggs from the wild population was sustainable, he said.

The Future

There is plenty of room for picnics and for children to let off steam safely or just sit and watch the animals. Unregulated hunting of crocodiles in Australia drove numbers dangerously low until rules protecting them were introduced in the early 1970s, Webb has written. He said the number of saltwater crocodiles in the wild was now healthy and stable.
