About this deal

Steinhart is a German watchmaker founded in 2001. All of their watches are made in Switzerland. The Steinhart Ocean is heavily influenced by the Rolex Submariner. Steinhart’s position in the watchmaking world is an affordable quality brand. I think they accomplish that task. They build a quality watch at a good price. Vostok Amphibia – 39mm The microadjustment pushers on the clasp can be slid up and down for an exact fit (it’s also fun to use). And finally, the Aquaracer runs on an ETA-based 38 hour automatic movement.

My favorite aspect of the watch head is the brown bezel. Brown is such an underutilized color, and the addition of this earthy tone compliments the off-white hands well. The off-white hands would look out of place with a more standard blue or red bezel. While the Seamaster can’t deny certain visual similarities with the Rolex Submariner, its diameter is actually slightly bigger at 41 mm.

You might think of these as "dive watches for women”, but I don’t think that’s quite right. Let’s take Omega’s “women’s” collection as an example: the brand seems to think women’s watches means sizing down the case, swapping in a quartz movement, and throwing some diamonds on it. In reality, there are tons of exciting, non-blinged out options with diameters measuring 36 to 39mm. Powering the Superocean 36 is the Breitling Caliber 17 movement, which is essentially a chronometer-certified, Breitling-decorated and -assembled version of an ETA 2824-2. As such, it offers the standard specs of running at a frequency of 28,800vph with a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. When it comes to the venerable ETA 2824, this is about as good as it gets, and since you also receive chronometer-certified timekeeping performance, the Superocean really isn’t the same as a watch that uses an off-the-shelf Sellita SW200. However, given the price point, it would have been nice to see Breitling give the Superocean something a little more special in terms of its internals — especially considering that the brand has access to Kenissi-manufactured calibers. That said, generic movement designs offer unparalleled serviceability, and if you want to wear this bright orange timepiece as a fun and carefree vacation watch, there is something to be said about having the option to get it serviced at virtually any competent watchmaker in the world.

If you have small wrists and a love for dive watches, you might consider this a cursed combination. However, as a skinny-wristed fellow and a long-time admirer of classic sporty divers myself, I can assure you that there are more options for us out there than you may think. Most pilot watches in today’s market are oversized but IWC, the masters of pilot watches, makes a solid version with a 36mm stainless steel case. This post explores alternatives to the larger dive watch and focuses on dive watches for the small wrist in the 37mm, 38mm, and 39mm range. It’s still a lot of money for most men, but remember that the dive watch is the most versatile watch of them all from a style point of view. For me, the sweet spot is 42mm to 43mm. I dive a lot, but I’m not going to buy a multi hundred dollar watch that is 48mm wide to only wear it over a wetsuit when I’m diving. I don’t even wear a wetsuit on many of my dives in warm tropical waters. When you think of the brand Breitling, more than likely, a highly complicated chronograph design for pilots comes to mind. Breitling has created a remarkable legacy for itself in this space, but they do create many other watches that are worthy of attention. The Breitling Superocean line is one that deserves more attention than it currently receives. This line of dive watches is very broad and contains options for almost anyone. Some say that divers are also built big for the same reason armored vehicles are big, but Bruce Lee taught us that you don’t have to be big to be tough. The mid-size Tudor Submariner is also a smaller riff on a classic dive watch. Tudor began making its own Submariner in the 1950s, shortly after big brother Rolex first launched its line. But, the classic Tudor Submariner always measured 39-40mm. Not until the 1990s, with the release of the Submariner reference 75090 and 75190, did Tudor release a smaller, 36mm dive watch suitable for even the most modest of wrists. Because I’m a bit shallow, I prefer the ref. 75190 since it features a Rolex-signed crown (a final relic from the days when Tudor used Rolex parts whole cloth to create cheaper alternatives with ETA movements), but the references are largely similar in form and function. As you can see, there are plenty of high quality, stylish dive watches that look good on smaller wrists.
