About this deal

It’s actually skincare in disguise. Oh, I’ve seen endless sun protection products which seem to have plenty of built-in bonuses, but never ones which actually deliver – this time I ditched some of my normal daily products as my skin was so happy with the moisturising and protecting ingredients. Physical/mineral products reflect visible light as well as UV, which can make the formulations opaque and leave a white residue on the skin. Some formulations use nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide – the minerals responsible for the residue. Nanoparticles are smaller, and as they scatter visible light – rather than reflect it – the sun creams are transparent. How to use sun cream This is sure to be a firm favourite of my mum’s, who has in the past been known to avoid wearing sun protection completely (tsk tsk!) in the hopes of getting a better tan, and for people who like to get a “base tan”.

Babies less than six months old should be kept out of direct sunlight, according to the NHS, and the skin of young children should be protected from the sun when UV levels are high. It’s water-resistant as well, making it perfect for those who enjoy extreme water sports or surfing. Whatever outdoor activity you enjoy – from gardening to triathlons – the Ultrasun Sports Gel will keep you comfortably protected and will keep up with you and your active lifestyle.EmRD46 A keeper! I bought this as I had seen it recommended by Caroline Hirons & others, and the French pharmacy brand I had been using have reformulated and my skin did not like! I suffer with terrible polymorphic light eruption, so will try anything! I absolutely loved this suncream. My PLE didn't come up at all, and although I think this was partly to do with the fact my skin had been exposed through summer, the fact that it didn't show at all is fantastic. I also didn't burn at all and have a lovely tan instead - I don't burn easily, but I'll normally catch a bit, but even after spending all day on a boat, I was protected and didn't have to keep reapplying. There are many factors that make Ultrasun stand out from its competitors. From their ethical values to their clean formulations, their weightless textures to their long-lasting protection – there’s a lot that makes Ultrasun special. From April to September, when the UV Index is generally higher. It takes 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure each day for those with fair-to-olive skin to get enough vitamin D.

If your skin isn’t susceptible to sun sensitivities but you are planning to go away somewhere or live somewhere with very intense heart conditions, then the Extreme Sun Protection SPF 50+ would still be a good shout due to the very high protection it offers and the high absorption of UVA rays. Consider the time of day – If you're spending time in the sun without wearing sun cream, you should only do so before 11am or after 3pm, as the middle of the day is when you're at the greatest risk of getting burnt. I tried the Extreme 50+SPF and it absorbed more easily than some body lotions I own, for both me and Minnie. Instead of squirmy crossness, I actually got requests for ‘more sun lotion’ and she rather helpfully tried to do my legs as well. I haven’t had a chance to try this on holiday yet. However, I can’t wait for that feeling after a full day on the beach, getting out of the shower and slathering my sun-stressed skin in this cooling, watery aftersun. I might even pop it in the fridge for full-on ice-cold relief! Discover More: Physical or mineral sun creams create a barrier on the skin that acts like a mirror, reflecting and scattering the UV light. The industry guideline for water-resistant sun creams allows the SPF of a product to drop by 50% after a total of 40 minutes in water. Water-resistance testing also takes place in what is essentially a bath – using tap water. If you’re in your twenties like me, ageing might not be your biggest concern right now. However, I know that my future self will thank me if I start thinking about skin-ageing now and doing what I can to protect against wrinkles and fine lines from appearing. SPF is one of the best anti-ageing steps you can take, and it’s more effective the earlier you start as the majority of premature skin ageing comes from damaging UV rays. This is why I always start my day off with a hard-working sunscreen that I can wear under my makeup and provide all-day protection.

The best sunscreens you can buy in 2023 1. Avène Intense Protect SPF 50+: Best sun cream for very sensitive skin Why I love it: This sunscreen is the go-to for anyone who struggles with sun sensitivities. The SPF50+ formula is suitable for the whole family and will ensure even the most sensitive and reactive skin is protected. This tends to mean that two commonly used chemical UV filters linked to coral bleaching – oxybenzone and octinoxate – aren’t used. Why I love it: One of the reasons I love Ultrasun so much is that they cater for everyone. The Anti-Ageing & Anti-Pigmentation sunscreen is the ideal choice if you struggle with areas of pigmentation and UV-induced dark spots. When choosing sun cream for your child, look for a short ingredients list and the terms 'fragrance free' and 'hypoallergenic'. The WHO recommends 35ml of sun cream (seven teaspoons' worth) to cover an adult, so use around a quarter to a half of this depending on the size of your child. Some people worry that using sun cream might prevent them from getting enough vitamin D, but this isn’t the case unless you really overdo it. LDL26 Great SPF Face Moisturiser It goes on really well, feels good and protects the face from the sun. So all good!

I don’t have children myself, so it’s difficult for me to comment on how suitable this is for the whole family. However, who better to turn to for advice and a recommendation than our lovely customers! Here’s what a parent had to say about the Ultrasun family sunscreen to give you further peace of mind: Why I love it: When I’m at the beach or by the pool, I’m usually the person sitting under the shade. This means that at the end of my holiday, I’m usually just as pale as when I arrived. The Ultrasun Tan Activator has changed that, because now I can lavishly enjoy the sun while getting a nice, healthy tan without compromising my skin’s health. In my unscientific test, Minnie stayed her usual creamy white and while I burn at the drop of a hat, I didn’t get a single pink stripe.
