Why we love them: Developed as a cross-training shoe, the Metcon 8 is designed for tough workouts, gym sessions, and classes where you typically make a lot of sharp, aggressive and lateral movements. It features a flat sole for stability during weightlifting exercises, and a flexible forefoot for agility during functional exercises. The Metcon 8 also has a sturdy upper that can handle rope climbs, box jumps, and other demanding movements. It is suitable for those who perform a variety of exercises in the gym and need a shoe that can handle the demands of their workouts.

But the shoe is still plenty flexible enough to perform plyometric exercises with ease. We were able to bend the shoe 90 degrees with just 19.3N of force, which is 14.2% less than the average training shoe. That being said, I think if you normally find that you have ample room in the toe box of your true-to-size shoes, then you’ll definitely want to size down a half size for the Reebok HIIT 2. The Primus Lite III is a minimalist shoe designed to offer as much freedom as possible when it comes to moving around, whilst still ensuring the foot the grip and protection you would get from a conventional shoe, just in a lean 4mm sole. The wide shape also allows your feet to move freely within the shoe without restricting movement, whilst the thin sole means that your feet can feel the ground.In the lab, we learned that the Free Metcon 5 has a heel-to-toe drop of 6.4 mm. This figure is well within the 4 mm to 8 mm range, which covers all measurements that we deem most suitable for HIIT and other workout regimens that rely on the intensity and versatility of exercises. In comparison to running shoes, cross trainers tend to have less cushioning in the heel and more in the midsole region. The toe box in a cross-training shoe is roomier than in a running shoe. Cross trainers also have a lower heel-to-toe drop than either a running or a weightlifting shoe. Average heel-to-toe drop The forefoot of the Nano X3 felt a bit firm. Our HA durometer in the lab revealed that the forefoot has a firmness score of 27.6, which is a notch higher than the 26.6 average. The setup gave us more speed and control, pretty much what we needed when executing many HIIT exercises.

To break down the performance of the Reebok HIIT 2, I’m going to discuss how this shoe performs in multiple categories to help you conceptualize if this model is right for you. The outsole on this model also provides a nice level of traction which I was a fan of. The Reebok HIIT TR’s outsole did a good job at providing you with traction, but the refined and reworked rubber tread on the Reebok HIIT 2 takes the edge slightly here. I never felt like I was losing traction on wood floors, rubber gym mats, or when training outdoors. Reebok HIIT 2 for Running and Daily Wear The heel, for its part, compressed quite well. It registered 20.5 on the HA durometer while the average is as high (or firm) as 27.0. The softness that the heel delivered neutralized the impact of our sprints, jumps, and other nimble movements. If you're a runner, it's likely that you end up using your road trainers when doing your strength and conditioning work, which is fine to a point but if you're training becomes more focussed you should be looking at something that adds the support and safety you need for the task at hand. The one-piece upper is durable, breathable and flexible for ease of movement no matter what your workout is, and since the material is abrasion resistant it should stand the test of time. Despite liking the Reebok HIIT TR as a whole, there are two potential cons I could see others running into with this model. The first major difference is the upper construction and materials used in each model. The Reebok HIIT TR has a mesh upper construction with multiple layers throughout. The Reebok HIIT 2’s upper is made with a singular material with no external stitches. This HIIT 2 also features heel counters for additional boot support. Both shoe’s uppers are solid, in my opinion. An all-round gym shoe is a great option if you only want one pair and never know what your workouts might look like – but, if you're really serious about a specific type of training, you may want to invest in something a bit more focused.The Nike Zoom Metcon Turbo 2 is our shoe of choice for cranking up the speed on our HIIT workouts, as its responsive and cushioned midsole, phenomenal flexibility and unbeatable breathability help us push the pace while performing our exercises. The technology that sits within the Cloud X is identical to the other models that fall under the iconic On umbrella. Although it is still classed as a running shoe, we've found its real strength lies in general training, covering everything from gym workouts to HIIT, CrossFit and shorter runs. The Metcon Turbo 2 made just about every exercise we did on our HIIT workouts, from burpees to jumps to sled pushes, much more natural-feeling thanks to its exceptional flexibility. And indeed, our lab test proved how pliable the shoe is as it took 32% less force to bend it 90 degrees.

The best gym trainers for you depend on your activity of choice, but in general, you’ll want to ask yourself the following: Another aspect to like about this shoe is that the refined and reworked upper breathes well and is lightweight. This shoe features a textile upper construction and doesn’t have a ton of overlays like the previous Reebok HIIT TR. This is nice because it gives this shoe a lightweight feel which you want for HIIT workouts. Compared to the Reebok HIIT TR, I do think the Reebok HIIT 2 takes a slight edge for performance, but there is one con to note with this shoe. The Reebok HIIT 2 is an all-around solid HIIT shoe. I like the addition of the Reebok Floatride Energy Foam in this shoe’s midsole and think it’s a good addition for this shoe line. The Floatride Energy Foam gives this shoe a much more responsive feel and it walks a good line between stability and versatility. If you can contextualize the construction of this model to your performance needs, then I think this is a good shoe for certain activities. For example, it’s not the best for heavy training, but it wasn’t designed to do that.From a lifting point of view, this model will work for casual and recreational training. Basically, if you want to wear this shoe for mostly class workouts and HIIT training, then for lifting here and there it will work. It’s moderately stable for loading up to 365 lbs, but I wouldn’t train much heavier than that in this shoe. We can't help but feel super fast while wearing the Nike Zoom Metcon Turbo 2, especially when doing exercises like jumps and sprints. Its responsive midsole, particularly the Zoom Air unit in the forefoot, adds a nice pop of energy to push us even farther. That midsole foam, which we measured to be 17% softer than the average training shoe, also offers excellent cushioning that keeps our feet well-protected during those speed-oriented exercises.
