[39] I am a largely self taught musician, but during COVID, I started studying music properly with a university professor and have been hugely inspired by that. Seeing how things I developed instinctively actually fit together is mind blowing. I’m inspired by going into things as deeply as possible – songs, books, great movies, lyrics, poetry, chord sequences, bebop solos – the deeper you go the more interesting things seems to get. a b "Jamie Cullum, Twentysomething". The Guardian. 10 October 2003. Archived from the original on 28 September 2022. Reviewers lined up to praise the album on its first release, with the revered jazz critic John Fordham writing in The Guardian: “Cullum’s virtues are a remarkable relaxation (which makes music-making, even in a sophisticated studio recording, sound like fun to him), a youthful bounce that makes his work engagingly airy and light, and a hipness of timing that marks him out from many of his competitors.” Cullum's Jewish father, whose mother had managed to flee Nazi Germany, was born in Jerusalem. His mother, whose father was Indian and mother Burmese, was born in Burma; when the Japanese invaded, the family left Burma and moved to Wales, when his mother was age five. [3]

Sam Wedgwood (guitarist, bassist and trumpeter) later joined Cullum on tour, for a little over a year. At the end of 2005 Cullum was joined by Tom Richards (saxophonist, occasional guitarist and percussion). Soon after that Sam Wedgwood left to pursue his own solo musical career. At the beginning of 2006 Rory Simmons (trumpeter and guitarist) joined the band as a replacement, bringing the total number of band members (including Cullum himself) to five. I’ve begun to focus a little more heavily on my own songwriting and to write lyrics that resonate harder whether from the personal or imaginative perspective. Sitting at the piano and trying to write a song with music and lyrics that fit together like they’ve always been in cahoots, is the most pleasurable way I can spend my working day. Having said that, I realise I’m still chasing the feeling of that first jump into professional recording, of which Twentysomething was the start. [27] Recent work [ edit ] The bright blue vinyl, coupled with a minimalist label design, provides something of a visual treat: rotate the record on the turntable and watch from above and as the grooves create pleasing patterns the disc appears to slow down and speed up, and eventually label and disc appear to rotate in different directions. It’s a fun feature, but most people, I expect, will be more concerned about the sound.
