About this deal

Ocean Digital are a Hong Kong-based manufacturer who produce a large range of affordable DAB and internet radios. Their products are made in China and are priced favourably when compared to better known brands like Pure and Roberts. The IHeartRadio app is one of the leaders in the audio space, a solid option for most. Pandora Music As well as radio, the Ocean Digital WR238CD features a Bluetooth receiver, so you can pair it with your phone or tablet and play music through the radio’s speaker. Like all Bluetooth radios on the market at the moment, the WR238CD doesn’t have a Bluetooth transmitter, so you can’t use it with Bluetooth headphones. The WR-26’s built-in speaker provides well-balanced audio. In fact, readers who own late-model compact shortwave portables (like the XHDATA D-808) will recognize the audio characteristics of this small internal speaker that I assume uses an acoustic chamber to provide a better bass response. I’m always pleased to find compact radios that implement this type of speaker.

One downside with the WR238CD is that it can take a long time to find internet radio stations as you either have to search for them manually or scroll through several menus and sub-menus. Entering station names via the remote control is time-consuming, but this is quite common with internet radios. It offers access to hundreds of radio stations, both online and traditional FM, available for free streaming. At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a high quality DAB Internet Radio, the WR230S is probably one of the best I could name right now, especially if your budget is limited to 170 USD.

The Ocean Digital WR232 generally works well, but the design isn’t as intuitive as it could be so some functions are quite fiddly. All in all, it gets the job done at an affordable price. One interesting note: when you tune to an audio source–a stream or FM station for example–the volume fades in slowly after making the selection. FM Radio/DAB The Ocean Digital WR282CD sounds great on paper, as it offers FM and DAB/DAB+ in addition to internet radio. However, DAB/DAB+ reception on this radio tends to be poor when compared to other DAB radios.

The sound quality felt acceptable given the tiny internet radio size, and our expectations were low. It has a 2.5″ full-range speaker which is loud enough for kitchen or bedroom use. If you need it for your lounge or looking for a reasonably powerful sound, there are better options (e.g., Grace Digital Encore+ or Como Audio: Musica) in our review. The Ocean Digital WR282CD is essentially a more advanced version of the WR282 reviewed above, this time with the addition of DAB/DAB+ radio. Don’t be fooled by the product’s name—the WR282CD doesn’t contain a CD player. It’s an internet radio with a good range of features including Bluetooth. Features Nearly all internet radios include remote controls, but some of them can only be controlled through their remote. Using a remote as the primary means of interacting with your internet radio can certainly take longer, but it’s perfect for anyone who misses the old days of using a remote to play tunes through a hi-fi system. Digital assistant The Ocean Digital WR825 is an internet radio with FM. It has a speaker on each end, giving it stereo sound. FeaturesThe Ocean Digital WR60 offers good value for money, and gives you a huge choice of radio stations to listen to. You can adjust the EQ to get a decent level of bass, though the over-sensitive volume control can be somewhat frustrating. The front-facing speaker provides a balanced audio with the help of 12 EQ presets to choose from, so you can customize the sound to your liking.

This app is a fantastic option for sports fans or anyone looking for some great audio content from all over the world. The treble is smoother, without much presence and extension in the highs. The treble extends as high as about 8-9 kHz realistically, and that is still quite good for the price point. Most of the energy is in the mids, with the bass keeping company so that the sound isn’t boring, but the treble really is’t the highlight of WR230S and their sound. Dynamics are ok, better than I expected from a radio, but still a bit behind competitors like multi room solutions. Radio tech came a long way since its birth, but it is still nowhere near good enough for most music lovers to enjoy. At least when it comes to the traditional radio, which has a very limited dynamic range and detail level. But DAB radio, well, that’s a different story entirely. DAB Radio basically means digital audio broadcasting. It is also old as the world, having started in 1995, but the newer DAC+ standards allow for almost AAC quality, and even 320kbps AAC for some stations. This means that it will be much better than your typical FM radio signal. I like this functionality because it means I can even connect to streaming sources not found in the Skytune directory like more obscure internet stations, LiveATC and scanner feeds. WR230S comes with its own power adapter, and you won’t need an iFi iPower to use it and for it to sound good.Another massive factor in the audio streaming world, Pandora might be one of the most popular services around. While this app has both paid and free versions, the free version has everything you’d need for internet radio use. TuneIn Radio
