In our testing, this was the lowest-spinning ball of the four, but it still had plenty of spin on short shots. The highest-spinning balls off drivers hit at 85 mph were the Kirkland Performance+ V3, PXG Xtreme, Srixon Z-Star Diamond, Inesis Tour 900 and Callaway Chrome Soft X. Softer options among the top 10 include the Bridgestone TOUR B RX, Callaway Chrome Soft and Titleist AVX. For this year’s test, we switched from a 7-iron to an 8-iron and moved our wedge distance to 55 yards. Our hope was that with the higher-lofted clubs and shorter wedge shots, we’d see greater spin differentiation through the bag.

We found some degree of core centeredness and or layer concentricity issue in roughly two-thirds of the balls in our sample. While the data suggest low-compression balls can’t match the speed of firmer balls, the Callaway Chrome Soft qualifies as a faster soft option under our test conditions. Golfers seeking as much spin as they can get from a soft (or at least soft-ish ball) should consider the OnCore ELIXR ( soft-ish) or the Bridgestone TOUR B RX.

The surprise on the list is the Callaway Chrome Soft X LS which didn’t spin less than the standard Callaway Chrome Soft X under the conditions tested.

The bottom line is that the trajectory of the golf ball is complex. Simplification is always risky but we’d suggest relying more heavily on maximum height than launch angle. Other Things to Know

We can’t emphasize this enough: It doesn’t matter if you shoot 68 or 108; the golf ball is the only piece of equipment you use on every shot. With the core being less of a factor, the outer layers of the ball have a greater influence on speed. On our gauge, the Mizuno RB Tour X has an average compression of 95. That’s the same general compression range as balls like the Callaway Chrome Soft X, Srixon Z-Star Diamond and XV (prior-gen) and the 2022 Bridgestone Tour B X. Secondly, if i had a criticism, i would say the way the data is presented is confusing. Its overly “scientific” and could be “dumbed down” a bit in relation to the charts you put together and the way the categories are explained. The test continues to evolve and i love it more than any other test out there. The BALL is the main piece of equipment that NEEDS to be fit for amateurs. I have been “fit” 5 times by 5 different “fitters” and each time a different recommendation is given. I think fitting for anyone above a 10 HDCP really does not work…..except for the ball. Just my controversial opinion.

Firmer options that produced outstanding iron distance include the Bridgestone TOUR BX, Srixon Z-Star Diamond and the Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash. The absence of the 100-compression Callaway Chrome Soft X LS from the top of this group is perhaps surprising, though the higher-spinning Chrome Soft X made the list. Despite an average compression rating that’s closer to Pro V1x than a real Pro V1, it produced ball speeds at or below what we saw from the softest balls in the test. While subtle differences matter to some degree, there’s not much separation at the top of the table beyond those few balls. The RB Tour is the ball that is designed for players looking for a flatter launch, lower spin, but who still want to have a lot of green side control. Out on the course, I easily noticed that shots off the tee started out in a lower window and had a very flat trajectory. The RB Tour did offer a straighter flight with less curvature to my draw and hook while offering a soft and solid feel. Distance was good with the ball but I think the combination of lower launch and spin took a few yards from me compared to the RB Tour X. When you get into these premium golf balls, you’re really splitting hairs on a lot of things,” admits Voshall. “But the thing we want to point out is the measurable difference we’ve been able to from having more detached trigger points and more turbulent airflow due to the Cone Dimples.” For golfers who produce 2,800 rpm or more spin with the driver, the presence of these softer balls near the top of the distance chart suggests that low spin properties of low-compression balls can help offset the significantly lower ball speed for high spin golfers.
