Most computers with navigational functionality will allow you to either directly input a destination, with the computer then put together a route (often using quiet roads popular with other riders), or to design and upload your own course using the brand’s software. Unless you’re already out on the bike and going somewhere on a whim, the latter is a far better option. Computers that offer turn-by-turn navigation will let you know exactly how far you have to go before, well, turning, but it’s worth bearing in mind that this will put a strain on your device’s battery life.

GPS Root also includes a route builder. You place waypoints, which the app then links up. Again, it’s adequate rather than great and I found it sometimes linked waypoints via non-intuitive routes, rather than those I preferred or offered alternatives that weren’t rideable on a road bike. When a Lezyne GPS freezes you can shut down the device by pressing 'Menu' and 'Enter' for 30 seconds. We call this a 'Hard Reset'. If this happens while driving, you will unfortunately lose all your recorded trip data. To update your Lezyne GPS unit, you'll need a Windows or Mac computer. No other operating systems are supported. Updating your Lezyne GPS Navigation requires loading a route from your phone to the computer. There's no pre-loaded base map, but there are turn-by-turn directions. Routing doesn't always seem to follow the least traveled roads or greenways, in my experience although you are able to select your preferences in the app, according to Lezyne. The ability to do this is a little hidden right now, but they claim to be adding a pop-up feature that will make it much more clear. The combination of the larger mount and deeper unit means that the Super Pro GPS sits quite high off the bars and looks a bit chunky. It looks a bit better with a forward mount, which positions the computer in front of the bars. That’s something that you can buy separately or as part of Lezyne’s Loaded bundle, which also includes a heart rate monitor and cadence sensor. The Lezyne Super Pro GPS is deeper than the Garmin Edge 130 Plus though, at 26mm versus 16mm for the Garmin. The Polar V650 GPS is a full color touchscreen bike computer that isn't damaging to your budget. You get navigation mapping with TOPO maps meaning real lay-of-the-land detail with your routing overlaid. It also means easy access to maps wherever you go. A mid-sized unit, the Super Pro has a 40mm by 33mm monochrome screen. That screen size is quite a bit smaller than the unit itself though, which measures 71mm by 48mm, is 26mm deep and weighs 60g. It sits quite high on the bike’s bars or stem, particularly since the standard mount is tall.

Note: the file size of the map on the app is significantly larger than the size of the map file on the GPS. Note: Anytime you do a firmware update by connecting the device in bootloader mode, you have to force a second update after that. If you don't, you may experience issues moving forward. The device contains a GPS/GLONASS chipset, integrated barometer, and accelerometer for superior data recording and elevation readings. It also offers up to 28 hours of battery runtime and is easily recharged via a highly water-resistant micro-USB port. All credible GPS computers will offer either Ant+ or Bluetooth Smart connectivity (often both), which in turn allows you to pair the computer with a range of third-party devices, including heart rate monitors, power meters and cadence sensors. These will then return a wealth of related data. Note: Whenever you perform a firmware update by connecting the device in bootloader mode, you will need to do a second update afterwards. Failure to do so may cause problems with future updates.

Value

On a very basic level, all GPS bike computers will display simple data like speed (current/average/maximum), time and distance (trip/total), but that’s only scratching the surface of the capability of most units. You can also look forward to compatibility with Strava and other 3rd party apps, including auto-sync.
