The Whispering Dead by Darcy Coates is a paranormal mystery novel, and the first in the Gravekeeper series. I wouldn't call it horror.
Suspicious of Lilith, the theatre owners wife enlists the help of Jenny to spy on her, to truly get to the route of the evil that has started to emerge from the very heart of darkness within the theatre walls. What is it about Keira? She just makes friends with people as soon as they look at her - they are inviting her to come hang with them. Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things): The plot was good, and it was a very fast read. It was suspenseful, but definitely not scary. It was actually a light, fun read! But I don’t think I’ll continue it. If I want something that feels different by Darcy, I’ll probably try “from below”, because who doesn’t love haunted ships?I’d like to thank NetGalley and Bloomsbury for approving me for an ARC of this book. I first came across Laura Purcell when I listened to the audio, The Shape of Darkness, since then I have been collecting her books and couldn’t resist reading this one. See, it’s a very entertaining and easy breezy read. It’s kind of Horror-Lite. It’s got its spooky bits that do give a bit of a chill. Light gruesomeness, but not too much. Lots of buddy-humor. Remarkably light and leaves you smiling. The rainforest holds this town in its thrall, the legend of The Whispering being passed down from parents to children. They believe it. The novel opens with our protagonist, Callum Haffenden, returning (somewhat reluctantly) to Granite Creek. Despite his hesitation, he is implacably drawn to the latest missing person case in Granite Creek. Despite his dread of his past, of the whispering, he must, once and for all, discover the truth.Lots of plot holes throughout but I am guessing these will be wrapped up in future installments, this is essentially a novel broken into five parts. According to Darcy, this book has sat completed on her hard drive for years. Reading The Whispering Dead, I felt this was the work of a younger and less experienced author. The Whispering Dead is not up to par with other books by Darcy. Some experts say this was intentional, while others argue that it was a mistake in the original sketches that was never corrected.
I thought this book would be more spookier and would have more shivering chills but really the book was more of a mystery/ghost story which was fine with me as it still drew me into the storyline as I wanted to know more about the lead female character, Keira. Despite her unique gift, Soon-ae is an introverted and lonely girl who lives a secluded life with her grandmother. When In-chul comes to interview her about the murders, she confides in him about the ghost she has been talking to. Her story piques In-chul's interest, and he decides to investigate further. The movie expertly combines elements of horror, mystery, and suspense to create an engaging and captivating storyline. The acting is superb, with So Ju-yeon and Kim Min-kyu delivering standout performances as the two detectives. The supporting cast is equally impressive, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their respective roles.

Laura Purcell, a skilful purveyor of gothic tales, has created another darkly twisting narrative in The Whispering Muse' Sunday Times Amendments to bookings made for dates of stay / reduction in the number of people will be subject to availability of rooms and cancellation policy of the Hotel. This was just the most hard to read Coates I’ve come across. You have to suspend your disbelief with all of her books…. But for this one I just kind of couldn’t.
