The SPB103j1 was released in 2019 and is the successor of the previous model SBDC031 which it replaced. I’m extremely pleased by the quality of the newly introduced sapphire glass, always shiny and clear, so much that it seems to disappear from the view when you look at the dial under certain angles. Another comparable watch is the Citizen Promaster Diver (BN0151-09L). This watch also boasts a water resistance of up to 200 meters and a reliable automatic movement. However, the Promaster Diver has a more modern design with a larger case and a more colorful dial. It also features a solar-powered movement, making it a more eco-friendly option.

The Seiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. This means that it can run for up to 70 hours after being fully wound. In 2019, under the new references SPB101J1 and SPB103J1, the Sumo was slightly revised. The overall design was maintained, with only minor alterations. The bezel insert was redesigned with a more discreet scale, a new green dial/bezel model was launched. What really changed was the use of a sapphire crystal and the new calibre 6R35, with a beefed-up power reserve. The 2022 Seiko Sumo The new Seiko Sumo – or Prospex Diver 200m SPB103J1 – isn’t a complete departure from the older model and keeps most of the attributes found on the SBDC031. Consider this new version as an update, with multiple improvements and slight visual evolutions, rather than an entirely new watch. All in all, the fundamentals are still present but the technical side has been improved, for a better owner experience. When it comes to comparable watches to the Seiko Prospex Sumo (Reference: SPB101J1), there are a few options worth considering. One such watch is the Seiko Prospex Turtle (SRP777). Like the Sumo, the Turtle is a dive watch with a similar design and build quality. It also features a reliable automatic movement and a durable stainless steel case. However, the Turtle is slightly smaller than the Sumo, making it a better option for those with smaller wrists.
