Viewed from the perspective of a studio engineer, they’re much more attractive. The SRH840 fold up across a plastic hinge at the top of each earcup, and the cups also swivel around 180 degrees, letting you easily listen to a single channel without the other interfering. The SRH840 are an ideal choice for professional audio engineers and musicians in applications such as studio recording and critical listening. The Shure SRH840 Headphones are ideal for anyone whorequires professional quality audiofor recording or monitoring. The Shure SRH840A are home studio-grade “professional” monitoring headphones. They’re the follow-up to the minor classic SRH840, which I reviewed a decade ago. Also included is a replaceable cable and a replacement set of ear pads which ensure a long-lasting lifetime of use.
Bass is measured and punchy. It’s far more reserved than the consumer standard, which may take a while to bed into if you’re accustomed to the mainstream tuning of, say, a Sony or Bose pair. However, depth is solid. Sub-bass isn’t particularly strong, with the real action starting around 55Hz. Shure’s ultra-wide 5-25000Hz frequency coverage claim was always going to turn out optimistic, given it goes well beyond the upper and lower bounds of human hearing. Speaking of breaking, the general build-quality of the headphones is pretty good. We would have liked to see a little more metal, but the plastic used is strong and well-built, so we can’t complain too much.
That said, it is not completely neutral. It does have a somewhat warm midrange that makes it fantastic for listening to vocals. Overall, for the price you pay, these cans offer a decent amount of detail and an overall balanced sound that should please audiophiles who are on a budget. Bass is accurate and tight, but a bit on the light side. As others have said, they can be a bit sibilant on some recordings. Not only that, but the ear pads, which should last a few years, can be replaced — so if they get worn out you’re covered. In the years that we’ve used them, we’ve found that there is also some wear and tear on the headband — but the fact is that’s normal for a pair of headphones.
My only real design/hardware complaint is that they come with only one long 3m cable. I’d happily use the Shure SRH840A as general-use headphones, but they’re not made for that job. In addition to the Shure SRH840A, an interchangeable cable, a 6.35 mm screw adapter and a carrying pouch are also included in the box. Compared to the SRH840, the SRH840A has a much more contemporary appearance. Even though the trim here is no longer silver-coloured but gold. The new colours reflect the quality that is continued in the headband. As with the previous model, the underside of the headband is made of fabric and the top of imitation leather. On the SRH840A, however, the imitation leather has gold-coloured stitching. In addition, all of the headphones’ visible screws are gold. Technology and values of the Shure SRH840AThe long cable is useful in the studio as you move around your gear, but would be annoying when you're on the move. If you want to use these headphones for commuting, you'll probably want to invest in a shorter one as well. Recommended 10/10 for anyone who is looking for a well-epuipped pair of headphones which highly live up to the price they sell for. Definitely worth it!! Ive had these headphones for about 2 weeks now and they are starting to break in quite nicely. I do use a nice DAC and Amp to help power these cans. They are only 44ohm headphones so they dont require much to power but a dedicated source can really improve the sound of the headphones i've found rather then playing them straight off the device. As an amateur hi-fi enthusiast I'm certainly no head-fi expert, but that won't stop me from saying that the Shure SRH840 professional monitoring headphones are a sweet sounding set of cans.
In general, the Shure SRH840s are comfortable, and while they’re not overly light, that doesn’t become too much of an issue. Sound The mid-range is extremely well-tuned. It offers a slight warmth to it, but not too much to sound muddy or overly low-mid-heavy. The high-mids are clean and crisp, without being too present — which would be problematic.Secondly: these are really not as durable as you would expect for the price range: after several years of moderate use these things are a sight to see:
