About this deal

It’s a little hard to decide where Port Royal falls in the spectrum of gaming. The small-sized box and the fact that the entire game is just 120 cards, makes me think it would be a filler game. In ‘ Port Royale 4’ you will take control of a colony as a young and ambitious governor who is eager to learn what it takes to manage and grow his small settlement into a bustling trader city. Of course, in Free Play mode, you can mix both of those in any way you want, letting you create your own unique and exciting story.

In this phase the active player will be able to take 1-3 cards from the harbor display and then all other players will also get a chance to take 1 card. Exactly how many cards the active player will be able to take depends on the number of differently colored Ships in the harbor display: The active player must first draw a card from the draw pile to put into the middle of the table - this will form the harbor display. Now he has to decide if he wants to draw another card or stop. He can continue to make this decision until he stops voluntarily or 2 identically colored ships are in the harbor display (see below) which would force him to forfeit the rest of his turn. Should he stop, the 2nd phase begins. Each person card has 3 points of interest. The Cost is how much it will cost to hire this person. The Points are how much this person will be worth in victory points at the end of the game. The Benefit is what players will receive for keeping this card in front of them. In the example below the Trader costs 5 coins, is worth 2 victory points, and provides an additional coin when taking a blue ship from the Harbor display. The winner is the player with the most points, with the player with the most coins in their hand breaking ties. Round-Up Every time a player gains coins, draw the appropriate number of cards from the draw pile and put them face down and with every coin visible into your display without ever looking at the front. For every card, a player owns 1 coin. Naval battles, raids, plundering and invasions await the Adventurer, while the Trader will develop trade routes and the economy to earn glory, fortune and power

Game Play

I think Port Royal will work well as both a family game and also as a filler game, on the far heavy side of the spectrum, for your gamer friends (if a 30 minute game can be considered a filler game). Give this one a look today though, it’s engaging game play and really low price point make it a win in my book. At the start of the game, the player chooses their national affiliation. In one of the cities of the selected nations, the player begins their career with a little ship with 19 goods they can trade. The prices change by offer and demand; after selling one type of good in a city, the price sinks. With enough money, the player can buy new ships or own plantations. With rising respectability among the population, up to 10 convoys with up to 100 ships can be controlled. Example: It's Andrea's turn. She had drawn 5 cards into the harbor display during her Discover Phase. 4 of those were differently colored Ships which is why she was able to take 2 cards. First she took a Ship worth two 2 coins. Then she spent the money to hire 1 Person. Port Royal ended up being a pretty fun and well designed card game. It’s easy to learn rules and overall light complexity help make its way to my gaming table quite often. I enjoyed how there are many ways to approach victory and how each player can stay invested in the game even when it’s not their turn.

Simple, cheap, small, (all 3 fit into one tiny box) fun, easy to teach (except for the symbology on the People cards) and is VERY accessible. Fun for Gamers and Casual players. Port Royal + Expansions Rating But after many plays, the depth of game play and the play time really pushes it more into the light-medium weight category for me. Which isn’t a big deal, but if you are going in thinking you have a filler game, you might be a bit disappointed. Each turn takes place over two phases: If you draw a second ship of the same color, you bust out and your turn is over. The aim is becoming Governor. To achieve this, trading and completing missions (finding the player character's captured mother and sister or a buried treasure) is required. When a tax increase card is drawn, play stops and players tally up the coins in their possession. Any player with 12 coins or more must place half of them (rounded down) in the discard pile. A player can always stop voluntarily and proceed to the 2nd phase unless he draws a Ship that is of identical color to one that is already in the harbor dispay and that he cannot repel. If you are playing with 5 players, put this card in the middle of the table instead. Now shuffle all remaining cards and set them face down on the table. This is the draw pile.

Appoint a leader for your adventure from four different character classes: the Explorer, the Merchant, the Buccaneer and the Pirate – each providing Should the draw pile ever be empty during game play, simply shuffle the discard pile and create a new face down draw pile. Ah come on... they won't notice or care... throw in some customization for the ship. Let them create their own flag. It'll be fine"

The merchant players in Port Royal, which won the Austrian Game Designers Competition under the title Händler der Karibik, are trying to earn as much as they can out of the Caribbean Sea, but if they set their goals too high, they might take home nothing for the day. Play continues in this manner until one player has reached 12 victory points. At that time each player receives another “current player” turn and the game will end. The winner of the game is the one with the most victory points. Make no mistake, Port Royal starts off sort of slow, and because you’re learning the distribution of cards you’re going to bust…a lot. In my first few plays my game group and I sort of glanced around the table wondering if there really was a game here. But within 15-20 minutes we had gotten the hang of it and were racing towards the finish. Just make you give yourselves enough time to get a feel for the game. To run these tests, you must have the Windows 10 October 2018 Update and a graphics card with drivers that support Microsoft DirectX Raytracing.
