About this deal

I was not expecting much from this one, thinking it would be a simplistic book on how to make some simple projects like pinwheels, top and side fold cards, and that what is described as unique is not so unique. But I was pleasantly surprised. I like that Ms. Hiebert laid things out so clearly. This seems to me a book that can cater to an audience of both beginners and some with experience in crafting. I like that she included a couple of glue recipes in the materials description section, and that several of the projects, like the origami ones, had nice step by step pictorials. Included at the rear of the book are twenty-one templates that are used in a variety of the above projects, be it for a one-sheet tree, pop-up dragonfly, or the alphabet. I liked the layout: a comprehensive introduction with tools, sourcing, supplies, and more is followed by the tutorials arranged by craft - folding, cutting, construction, and papermaking and surface treatments. Each of the tutorials contains a description with methods and techniques, tools and supplies list in a highlighted text box (measurements in American standard units), and step by step instructions accompanied by photographs. I've engaged in papercrafts my whole life and have tried most of the techniques described, but even so there were a few new ones for me (eg studs, fasteners and eyelets). I skimmed through some parts and examined others in detail. The section on bendable paper using wire supports was very interesting, and who can't resist pop-ups and origami?

Overall, this was a delightful introduction to papercraft, and I enjoyed reading it! I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into papercraft, and for any library craft sections. Some of the projects would also work well for library programming for children, adults, or teens. As someone who has loved paper, loved the look, feel and smell of paper since shopping for school supplies before the next new school year in grade school, I love reading books about the uses of paper. This book is one of many I have perused for ideas on how to manipulate paper in new and imaginative ways. this book gave me resource lists and even gave me a TON of books that I can continue to read about paper! If you’re someone who loves paper like I do, I truly felt excited to my fingertips (I’ll admit that’s weird but I don’t have to search- the author gave me info to gobble up!) I love to craft and create in various mediums, and over the past several years have delved into paper with enthusiasm. But sadly, I think my biggest hobby may be collecting crafting books. I am always looking to be inspired, and perusing crafting books and magazines are a huge source of that for me.The Folding chapter provides eight projects for a variety of ways to fold a piece of paper. Each project comes with written instructions alongside photographs for each of the steps in the written part. It tells you also the size of paper required if any tools are needed or templates. The projects were beautifully illustrated by the work of an artist, and it was lovely to see what can be achieved in the hands of an expert. However I thought that some of the projects went from ridiculously easy (a name card? seriously?) to much more difficult, with not much at the intermediary level. It's a good book to browse for ideas, and for experiments to see if you enjoy doing a particular thing. If you do, you can move on to more in-depth material.

When I started reading the section with projects, I was a little wary at the simplicity of them. However, the book showcases a nice progression of projects. They are organized by different papercraft techniques, and progress from easy to more and more difficult. The photo and text instructions are well laid out and fun to follow, and there are over forty projects to try out. Years ago, Hiebert acquired a century-old paper-making mold used in the day when specialized artisans made the writing tools one sheet at a time. Hiebert was fascinated by this age-old process and could not help but dip her hands into the mushy liquid past and feel first-hand what it was like to spend hours and days creating a simple sheet of paper. From that point, she was in love with the intricate possibilities that arose for paper-making art. And clearly, she is a master at working with a unique art form. I have to admit, Hiebert’s ability to create the colorful world of art with paper amazes me. It’s like viewing a watercolor painting on a piece of paper or an intricate modern art sculpture you could squash with two hands. Even if you are not a paper nut, which I am not, this book is worth considering. Sometimes, we all need a new passion, right? The results therefore cover a wide range of approaches and difficulties. Depending on your expectations and needs, that can be both great... or not so great. First, I would like to extend thanks to Net Galley and Storey Publishibng for providing this book without charge in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This book was a nice surprise! Paper is one of my “life loves”. I love the feel of paper texture and I’m always on the lookout for unique paper types, especially when using paper for cards for special people in my life. I loved severa things about this book: Would you like to learn a bit more about papercrafting besides just "cut here" and "fold there"? This is the book for you! Note: you'll also learn where to cut and fold, but you get the idea lol! There are lots of fun projects interspersed with profiles of paper artists featured in the book. The projects take the reader through a variety of techniques and skill levels, and the instructions are clear and well-photographed, making it easy to learn and improve one's skills. There's a visual guide section discussing ways to make your own paper, how to decorate paper, and fastening/connection methods. The last methods mentioned are shown in the book, but I understand not showing all the papermaking and decorating techniques, as the author does have a separate book on that. Hiebert includes a nice chonky resources list of suppliers, books, and where to find more on the artists featured in the book, and all the templates for the projects. While I think this is a fine book for beginners, to me it feels most suitable to those who've had some experience with papercrafting and want to learn more. I'd say this is a book anyone interested in papercraft should have on their shelf. Five stars. This would be a superlative choice for the home artist, maker's groups and activity groups, school/classroom instruction, or public library acquisition. Created by various designers, the one-sheet projects shown in the book are broadly categorised under folding, cutting and construction. Each project is visually explained with step-by-step illustrations and includes materials and tools required.NURSERY PAPERCUT é) Nursery papercut This cnarrmng papercu« is deceptívely simple to put together, and will make a lovely decoratíon for a nursery or young emld's bedroom. Hiebert’s book offers new ways to look at manipulating paper in ways you might not have considered before. Overall this is an interesting book to use, a good one for beginners as there are lots of easy projects to start with, then moving onto more involved papercraft projects. Paper is a magical and diverse material… . Paper can be both a surface (used in practical and artistic ways) and a work of art in and of itself."
