About this deal

If the Tactical Doctrine was active for your army during the previous battle round, you can change it so that the Assault Doctrine is now active. The secret is out: what we had up our 10,000-year-old sleeves for the final climactic instalment of the Gathering Storm trilogy was a couple of master-crafted pistols, a Grand Master of the Grey Knights and a Primarch! Alpharius was confirmed killed by Rogal Dorn in the opening battles of the Siege of Terra. His twin Omegon took on the name Alpharius, butwas later killed by Roboute Guilliman on the planet Eskrador – although there are rumors he survived.

More than one of the capsules was breached whilst it drifted through Warpspace -- the forces of the Immaterium leaked in, wreaking havoc on the gestating being inside the capsule. Undoubtedly damage was done and Chaotic corruption affected several of the primarchs, although the nature of that corruption would not become apparent until the Horus Heresy. Named Illyrium, it was a barbarous land of outcasts and petty, warring micro-states that had long harboured brigands and mercenaries who raided more civilised lands as often as they hired themselves as foot soldiers to fight their neighbours' wars. The child was brought before Konor Guilliman, one of a pair of nobles who bore the title "consul", whose authority governed the most civilised and powerful region of Macragge, and Konor adopted the infant as his own son in a manner not uncommon to his culture, naming him Roboute. The result was an elegantly structured but elaborate and highly meritocratic force. It unsurprisingly built on much that had already been evident in the character of the XIII Legion, as their primarch's gene-seed had already partly shaped them, however unconsciously, and through the application of analysis and reason sought to purge any weaknesses or deficiencies to achieve the optimal military outcome. The other seven traitor primarchs and legions all had their own justifications for turning their coats – and their individual journeys into ever deeper entanglement with the warp played out very differently. To celebrate this momentous occasion, we sat down with the Forge World team to discuss the Primarchs project. Designer Sam Egan was kind enough to talk us through each of the models in turn, and he had oodles of insights into the design process behind this amazing series of miniatures, which started a decade ago with the Red Angel himself. Angron, Primarch of the World Eaters

In accordance with his grand design, he planned to not merely take the world of his fosterage as his headquarters and recruiting ground as his peers had done and would continue to do, but from the start set it up as merely the fulcrum of a far larger network of provender and support.

Ancient Remembrancer sketch from Carpinius' Speculum Historiale, depicting Roboute Guilliman, primarch of the Ultramarines Legion, during the Great Crusade. Sam: “ Perturabo wasn’t one of mine, but he’s impressively huge and bulky, wearing Terminator armour which includes many integrated weapons systems. He wields his dead brother Ferrus’ hammer Forgebreaker, and stands atop a ruined Cerastus Knight.” Corvus Corax, Primarch of the Raven Guard They shall be pure of heart and strong of body, untainted by doubt and unsullied by self-aggrandisement. They will be bright stars on the firmament of battle, Angels of Death whose shining wings bring swift annihilation to the enemies of Man. So it shall be for a thousand times for a thousand years, unto the very end of eternity and the extinction of mortal flesh.

Yet it was the Ultramarines who, by the command of the Emperor, drove the first nail into the coffin of the Imperium. On the planet Khur the Ultramarines were tasked with razing the city of Monarchia, a holy city deeply prized by the Word Bearers. The shame and humiliation of this loss broke their Primarch Lorgar Aurelian’s faith in the Emperor, driving him to the side of Chaos – in turn causing the corruption and fall of Horus Lupercal himself. With the exception of the Luna Wolves, no Legion conquered as many worlds, or conquered worlds as fast, or left conquered worlds in such good state during the Great Crusade, as the Ultramarines. Whenever Guilliman liberated a world, he would not move on until he had set up a self-sufficient defense system, and left advisors behind to create industry, set up trade routes with the rest of the Imperium, and form a government whose first concern would always be the well-being of the people [1b]. Two things to note there, Sergeant. One is that there is no such thing as a minor detail. Information is victory. One cannot and should not dismiss any data until one is in a position to evaluate its significance, and that only comes with hindsight. So all detail is important until circumstances render it redundant. Meanwhile, the Emperorand his Custodes bodyguards weresearching the galaxy, retrieving the primarchs one by one, telling them of their true origins, and placing them in command of their allotted legions. By around 981.M30 (year 931 of the 30th millennium, or our year 29,931) all the named primarchs had rejoined the Imperium, and were fighting humanity’s enemies side by side.

It is the great irony of the Legiones Astartes: engineered to kill to achieve a victory of peace that they can then be no part of. Why do you want to know who the 2nd and 11th primarchs were? Why do you need to know who they were? Why the sudden interest? There are 18 primarchs and 18 legions. There never was a 2nd or 11th legion, or primarchs thereof. For the Emperor stands behind his sons as the primarchs behind their captains. It is a captain’s duty to place legionary lives in harm’s way before his own. There is too little glory in the galaxy to go around and officers must be generous in the trust they place in others – for one day such brothers must be captains too. To conduct battle on two fronts is an act of either desperation or utter foolishness. In such an arena it is neither skill nor firepower that brings victory, but the ability to manipulate that of your enemy. According to references in Games Workshop’s ‘The Primarchs’ novel series, most primarchs are roughly proportionate to a Space Marine in body type, butabout 70% bigger – working out to around 12 feet in height, as compared with seven to eight feet for a regular Astartes, and around nine to ten feet for a Custodian.Sam: “ Corax was a challenge to sculpt, mainly due to the Panoply of the Raven Lord, which includes two archeotech pistols, an energised whip, and artificer lightning claws. It was difficult to come up with a believable pose that integrated all of these elements, and worked with the Korvidine Pinions. His Sable Armour is based on Mk IV armour with details taken from Raven Guard artwork in the Forge World Horus Heresy books.” Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves We’re going with the Lion as #3. Mostly because he’s not out yet and we don’t have any pictures of just his Resin/Mini base. We DO like the sculpt and the fact that you get two head options and two sword options. He’s got the same kind of action pose as Ferrus Manus, but he wins his duels – just ask Russ. He also has a beard that we think Russ would also be jealous of. We might of ranked him higher if we could have seen just the resin…oh well! #3 is pretty respectable. #2 Leman Russ
