About this deal

McFarlane’s Spider-Man run in 1990 (issues 1-14, 16), and then his addition to X-Force, have recurring themes of horror of darkness. His roster of villains is more intense and destructive than usual, which is probably indicative of McFarlane pushing an older narrative on the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The neighborhood is a lot less friendly in general, with a focus on the dark streets of Manhattan and the morally reprehensible people that populate them. But, pragmatically speaking, there likely will never be a perfect reprinting of these issues. The only way to solve the issue is to buy the original comics, and that might be more than you’re willing to spend. I don’t blame you.a b c d e f g h i j Wallace, David (February 10, 2007). The themes, insofar as there are any, are also in line with the times--Spidey looks askance at the vengeance dealing "heroes" and anti-heroes of the era, like Wolverine and Ghost Rider. Why can't they be more like your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? Ironic because McFarlane's stories veered more into their territory, with bits of horror and darkness all about. Having said all that, I have a problem with this cover. It’s not a deal-breaker and it’s almost barely noticeable, but it does annoy me. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic-book superstar due to his high-selling work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise, [4] on which he was the artist to draw the first full appearances of the character Venom. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high-school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. The debut issue sold 1.7 million copies, [5] which as of 2007, remains a record for an independent comic book. [4] The character's popularity in the 1990s also encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic-book properties. These issues were all originally on newsprint. I have a few of them that I bought off the stands and a couple more that I traded for in my earliest days of comics reading. The History of Image Comics (So Much Damage): Part 1: The Founding".
