About this deal

Start your portrait by creating a base with your chosen highlight color. Make sure you cover the whole surface of the skin, except for the lightest areas where the light would hit the skin.

Hi! I use Polychromos colored pencils. For the skin tones, I basically use at least 3 to 4 shades depending on the color of the skin. For a lighter skin tone, my base color has always been Cream. I’ll update this for the names but the colors that I use help me create that realistic skin tone that I want :) hope this helps a little regarding the shades! Reply You wouldn’t want to be working on these fine details and then have your pencil tip shatter, leaving you with a large, dark stamp of color where the broken pencil tip hit the paper.

Read on for tips for creating skin tones with colored pencils.

We mentioned the smaller set of skin-colored Derwent Coloursoft Pencils above. But these pencils are part of the larger and more practical full 72-count set of Derwent Coloursoft Pencils. While many of the colors in the larger set will not be practical for use when doing skin tones, the added versatility of the larger set makes it a better buy, in our opinion. In the shaded areas of your portrait, begin to lightly apply the darker colors for the selection of pencils that you put aside earlier. This will help to enclose the piece and create a sort of boundary between the extreme light and dark colors. We’ve included this set for the serious artists who are willing to go to a higher price point to get the best quality. When it comes to blending, shading, and overall technique, these pencils can’t be beat. No it doesn’t!!! Just list the colors please!!!! It doesn’t over a year to edit this to add COLOR NAMES!!! But you will need to go with the 36-count set at a minimum (and preferably the 72-count set) to have enough of a “starting point” color selection. In particular, we have found that Flesh Pink, Salmon, Copper Beech, Felt Grey, and Pink Madder Lake colors are good for starting with (and most are only available in the 36 and 72-count sets). Please list the names and numbers of the pencils pictured. The directions cannot be followed without that information. Reply I think the colours are red, yellow and brown but kind of light. I am not sure but I am guessing by the look of it. But the person who made the tutorial should have still put the name of the colours. ReplyThese were a few of our favorite colored pencil sets for coloring skin tones. However, this list is by no means exhaustive. If you have a nice selection of starting colors, a pencil with good blending ability, and a steady hand, then you can begin producing great skin colors! If you compare CYM with BYR colours you can guestimate where each colour sits on the colour wheel. Compared to Blue, Cyan leans more towards the greens which is a cool colour. The other way around: Compared to cyan, the blue we use in BYR leans more to the red. Magenta leans more towards violet and the yellow from CYM leans more towards the green rather than orange, which the yellow in BYR does. I’ll go more in-depth in an upcoming article.

Grab your highlight and midtone colors and keep layering them over what you have already colored. Increase the pressure you use to paint with the pencils and mix everything together by coloring in circular motion. No matter the skin tone you are seeking, this guideline for your set of colors should help you select the pencils you will need. The lightest colors you use will be your highlights, the colors you use for the darkest areas will be your shadows and the colors you apply in between these two will be your midtones. You can also include some accent colors if you are going with the advanced selection. Wow, Jeanniene! Maybe you should try some wine. Your response was a bit aggressive for coloring tips. Reply Magenta, yellow and cyan are very similar to red, yellow and blue. The main reason I’m going for MYC is because they are lighter in value. Meaning it’s a lot easier for them to create vibrant light colours, whereas if you would use regular RYB it would be harder to achieve that. The outcome of these colours would result in darker values. You could add white, but you’d have to add a lot. Pencils are already a slow medium to work with so this would only add to the time. Warm VS cool colours

Maybe YOU should shut up and have several seats! There’s no point of making a tutorial if the names are not listed. It is frustrating! Reply To put it simply, the best colored pencil sets for coloring in skin tones should have the following attributes: If you are more advanced and have experience layering and blending colors, you might like to include some “unconventional” colors like blues, purples and greens to give the skin some depth. If you haven’t done this before, you can skip this until you feel more comfortable using these colors on skin. Applying colors
