About this deal

Senna tea and castor are both considered stimulant laxatives and should not be taken long term since long-term use or overuse can lead to more health problems. Senna Tea vs. Sencha Green Tea Vradelis S, Kalaitzakis E, Sharifi Y, et al. Addition of senna improves quality of colonoscopy preparation with magnesium citrate. World J Gastroenterol. 2009;15(14):1759-1763. doi:10.3748/wjg.15.1759 As you can see from the section above, senna tea’s benefits are quite focused on the digestive system, most specifically on clearing out the colon. Green tea has a much more varied array of possible benefits, including reduced risk of some types of cancer, type II diabetes and heart disease. For constipation in adults and children age 12 and over: Usual dose is 17.2 milligrams daily, not to exceed 34.4 milligrams per day. de Witte, P. Metabolism and pharmacokinetics of anthranoids. Pharmacology 1993;47 Suppl 1:86-97. View abstract.

As a laxative, senna can stimulate intestinal contractions that lead to a bowel movement. These contractions are caused by active chemical components in senna called anthraquinone glycosides known as sennosides. Senna is only effective as a laxative if its sennosides are transformed into rheinanthrones by beneficial bacteria in the colon. You can read more about how to prevent or treat constipation in the separate condition leaflets called Constipation(for adults) and Constipation in Children.

Furthermore, chronic use may cause pigmentation of the intestinal mucosa (pseudomelanosis coli) which usually recedes when the patient stops taking the preparation. Senna is likely effective in alternative medicine as an aid in treating occasional constipation in adults and children at least 2 years old. It is sometimes used together with another laxative or stool softener such as lactulose, psyllium, docusate, or mineral oil.

Constipation, a very common health concern, is definitely a top reason why people choose to try this herbal remedy. Senna tea is approved by the FDA as a nonprescription laxative. How can it help? Senna has been shown in controlled trials to soften stools while also increasing stool frequency and weight. Heldwein, W., Sommerlatte, T., Hasford, J., Lehnert, P., Littig, G., and Muller-Lissner, S. Evaluation of the usefulness of dimethicone and/or senna extract in improving the visualization of abdominal organs. J Clin.Ultrasound 1987;15(7):455-458. View abstract. Overuse of laxatives can cause the colon to stop reacting to usual doses of laxatives so that larger and larger amounts of laxatives may be needed to produce bowel movements. Do not give Senna without plenty of water. It will not work properly and you risk causing dehydration.Kobashi, K., Nishimura, T., Kusaka, M., Hattori, M., and Namba, T. Metabolism of sennosides by human intestinal bacteria. Planta Med 1980;40(3):225-236. View abstract.

The second aim of this study was to examine if the major sennosides A, B, and A 1 could also be determined selectively beside each other. An overlay of the HSQC diagrams of the isolated constituents showed that, in the range of 7.2 to 7.8 ppm ( 1H) and 134 to 136 ppm ( 13C), three separate signals occur, while most of the other signals show an overlay ( Figures S6 and S7). This is supported by the NMR data for the three constituents and the respective CH-6 position in the molecule. Subsequently, a second bs-HSQC method for the quantification of the three sennosides was developed with the following adjustments. Children: Senna is likely safe for children over age 2 when taken by mouth for up to 1 week. It is an FDA-approved nonprescription (OTC) medicine that can cause some side effects including stomach discomfort, cramps, and diarrhea. Senna is possibly unsafe when taken by mouth for longer than 1 week or in high doses. Children ages 2-5 shouldn't take more than 8.6 mg sennosides twice daily. Children ages 6-11 shouldn't take more than 17.2 mg sennosides twice daily. Children 12 years and older shouldn't take more than 34.4 mg sennosides twice daily. If laxatives are needed every day the cause of the constipation should be investigated. Long-term use of laxatives should be avoided. How long does it take for a senna laxative to work? On average, it takes about eight hours, but it can commonly take anywhere between six and 12 hours. A common recommendation is to have senna tea before bedtime to have constipation relief the next morning. As a natural constipation remedy, it can be used as a temporary form of relief but should not be a long-term solution. 2. Hemorrhoids Treatment Constipation is the most common side effect of senna. Less serious side effects may be more likely, and you may have none at all. Severe dehydration may cause tremors, weakness, blurry vision, fainting, kidney damage, and, in extreme cases, death. Dehydration often requires medical treatment.
