The tongue on the 1080v11 is a short, lightly-padded mesh that's partially gusseted. It’s comfortable but its length (how far down the upper it goes) does make it a bit more challenging to put on than a shoe with a longer tongue that allows the upper to open up more when unlaced.

The New Balance 1080 v11 is better suited for longer efforts but does not scream speed (nor is it designed to). Although not as bouncy as other New Balance shoes, the Fresh Foam X midsole does infuse a lively little bounce to every stride that contributes to a smooth ride. After running in the v11, I understand why. Is it a perfect shoe? No. But it is way more positive than negative.However, it also resulted in a toe-box that felt cramped for me. There were multiple times where I felt my big toe come off the edge of the sole unit.

There is a heel tab on this shoe, but it’s more like an elf tab, there’s no finger loop, and this tab is not all that easy to grasp. This is also where I have one of my main issues with this shoe. The blown rubber used on the outsole is very loud on concrete and asphalt. Every run I went on with a single knot ended with untied shoes, and even a few double knotted runs resulted in an untied shoe. However, it’s so soft, and the knit material of the upper is so soft and stretchy that my toes still fell off from time to time.The New Balance 1080v10 sole unit has been kept for the v11s. And after feeling it, I understand why. The unit uses a full-length Fresh Foam X foam to provide superior cushion and bouncy energy return. The best running shoe for you should feel like a natural extension of your foot that’s comfortable, snug, but never too tight. Ideally, your running shoe should fit with a ½ to a full thumb’s width of room between the front of the shoe and your big toe, leaving enough room to wiggle your toes freely without the shoes feeling loose. How do you best wash running shoes? The forefoot rubber on the outsole itself is a bit harder durometer (85.2hc) than average (77.4) and should add some longevity to these shoes if you’re interested in running in them for hundreds of miles. Surprisingly lightweight This has always been, and remains, a supremely cushioned shoe, and NB has refined the feature again and again over time, mostly by reducing weight while not losing any of the gorgeous bounce ad plushness. Great value The heel counter is very odd, it dips in the middle and the upper portion is just foam and this stretchy neoprene-like material. It acts as a low heel cup to keep your heel from moving laterally, which it does, but you sure do get a ton of heel slip vertically.

The upper has seen a redesign, but not a full overhaul. In this instance, New Balance kept their Ultra Heel structured heel cup and bootie design. This heel cup is honestly one of the best I’ve encountered.If this shoe was evaluated solely based on comfort it would be 5 stars, but it's a running shoe and it misses the mark by quite a bit. Superb comfort On the midsole, the company uses laser engravings to create a honeycomb design that helps compress and soften your landing. This is noticeable on heel strikes, but not as much on forefoot strikes.
