About this deal

The game is light weight with simple to perform actions and easy choices at the start of the game, which become more difficult as the game progresses. The game is very easy to teach and understand and each player gets 3 overview cards summarising all the actions they can take on their turn. The rulebook is well laid out with clear easy to understand examples and also has a glossary of the mushrooms adding to the theme of the game. The game takes up a very small amount of table space with the forest and player areas. The setup and teardown time is minimal with some shuffling and separating of cards.

If any of the cards you take force you to take actions you need to action these immediately such as moon, basket, or fly agaric cards. 3. Cook Three or More of the Same Type of Mushrooms Limited replayability: Fungi is a game that can become repetitive over time, as the basic gameplay remains the same from game to game. One very minor issue I noticed in the instructions is a typo in one of the paragraphs, and I also noticed that one of the action cards has a three-point icon, when only cluster cards should have these icons. Who’s It For The objective of this game is to match high-scoring mushroom cards with at least three of the same kind. You need to connect three (or more) mushrooms of the same type and put them in your “pan” to score.

After playing a few rounds of what I’ve called the “straight-line” setup, you’ll appreciate this so much. Trust me. The alternative Forest and Decay setup means you spend much less time sliding the cards around and, in my opinion, makes everything flow much better. According to the rules, the player who goes first is the player who last ate a mushroom. This rule is funny to me because whenever I play this game with the family, my Mum always goes first, because she loves eating mushrooms, and no one else does! Here’s The Components It’s so important to shuffle the cards well, both the first time you play and between every other round. You can end up with lots of the same cards in one go. It’s incredibly irritating when, like in my first game, you end up with four Fly agarics in a row right at the start! That makes things much more difficult.

The goal of Fungi is fairly simple: collect and cook mushrooms. To win? Simply have the most flavour points from the creations you’ve cooked. You can take all the cards from the Decay (not the Discard!) pile if you like. However, your new total mustn’t exceed your hand limit. This is the ultimate objective of the game. Cooking your mushrooms in your Pans is the equivalent of banking your points. At the end of the game, only the cards in your Pans count towards your final Flavor score. Everything in your hand is worthless. The instructions are reasonably long. Although the game is only 20 to 40 minutes (I’ve found the official estimate to be pretty accurate, in this case), you’ll need half an hour to learn the rules. It’ll also take you a couple of rounds to get used to the tactics. Overall, though, there’s nothing too complicated going on here. I’ve chosen to explain the standard “straight-line” setup in this article. I’ll also walk you through the alternative format, which I highly recommend once you know how to play. What’s In the Fungi box?See if you have what it takes to be the mushroom master in Funky Fungi from Ridley's Games! In this card-collecting game that will definitely grow on you, forage for the best fungi to be the first player to reach ten points and win the game. Keep in mind that any night versions of cards count as two and it is possible to use more than one card to score more points such as two butter if you have eight of a type, for example. The extra flavour cards do have to be played at the time of cooking though. 4. Sell Two or More of the Same Type of Mushrooms Add everything to your hand when you take the Decay pile, but immediately play any Baskets, Fly agarics, and Moons. Fly agarics are instantly placed in the Display and temporarily reduce your hand limit by four. They’re in effect for the current turn and the next one. For instance, if you have a Basket in your Display, playing a Fly agaric reduces your hand limit to six for this turn and the next. You must place cards from your hand in the Discard pile to bring your hand down to the new temporary limit. If you take a Pan from the Forest, you must put it in your hand. You can’t play it on the same go. After your opponent has their turn, place the Pan in your Display area.

Although the game can be played by two players, there’s more fun to be had with three or four players. There’s more choice of who to steal cards from or swap cards with, and the game lasts a little longer. This is a light card game, so you can play multiple games in one sitting; it’s good as a warmup or filler on game nights, or when time is limited and you’re looking for a short burst of fun. Final Thoughts

Bottom Line Up Front

I’ve found that the best strategy is to focus on the higher-value mushrooms. Go big or go home. You only have to beat the other player – there are only two of you. Chances are if you can’t collect the high-points cards, the other player can. Therefore, there’s no other way to guarantee your victory. Place the pair of shoes card at one end. This represents the start of the forest. Now reveal the first eight forest cards and place them in a row directly in front of the shoes and between both players. There is an alternative way of setting up the forest with the cards going in a spiral around the shoes, however, this is the simplest way to do it if you are just learning the game.
